Bottomfishing Meetings Set for Kona and Hilo

In preparation for the September 1, 2011 opening of the main Hawaiian Islands bottomfish fishery, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources, Western Pacific Fishery Management Council, and the National Marine Fisheries Service  will hold free statewide public workshops on the new bottomfish fishery rules and regulations. The workshops will feature interactive booths with information on the new state annual bottomfish vessel registration and new state commercial bottomfish reporting requirements. Happy Birthday, America!

Hawaii Island will celebrate July 4th, Independence Day, America’s 235th birthday, in a variety of ways. There’s something for everybody, all around the island, this Monday.   In Waimea, their 49th annual rodeo and horse races go from 9 til noon.    The event will honor Alan Gottlieb of Kahua Ranch and Ponoholo Ranch.  Gottlieb has been a strong supporter of the agriculture industry and helped start the Paniolo Hal of Fame, which honors many of the state’s and Hawaii Island’s cowboys. Island to Celebrate Kamehameha Day

Saturday is Kamehameha Day.  The annual event remembers King Kamehameha the Great, the man known for uniting the Hawaiian Islands.   Kamehameha the Great was born around 1758, and lived until May 8, 1819.  The day of remembrance was first established by King Kamehameha’s great grandson, Kamehameha V in 1871.   When the State of Hawaii was formed in 1959, establishing Kamehameha Day as a State Holiday was one of the legislature’s and Governor’s first acts.   Since June 11 is on a Saturday, all state and county offices will be closed on Friday. King Kamehameha Hotel Wins WAVE Award

In what has to be seen as ironic, the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel has been given the WAVE Award.  This is the TravelAge West 2011 Editor’s Pick Award for “Best New Resort or Major Renovation, Hawaii.”   The hotel completed a two-year, $35 million renovation in 2010, just about one year before the tsunami wave of March 11, 2011 slammed through the ground floor of the hotel.    The winner was selected well before March 11, but only announced last week. Parker Ranch to Distribute $2 Million

Parker Ranch Foundation has announced it will distribute $2 million to four Waimea beneficiaries.  This year, North Hawaii Community Hospital will receive  $960,000 and the Hawaii Community Foundation $400,000.   Parker Ranch School and Hawaii Preparatory Academy will each receive $320,000 dollars.  The Parker Ranch Foundation was set up after Richard Smart’s death in 1992 to benefit these four designated beneficiaries. Richard Smart was  a sixth generation descendent of Parker Ranch founder John Palmer Parker,  who arrived in Hawaii in 1809.  Parker became an advisor to King Kamehameha I.   When he  married Kipikane, daughter of a…

Jeremy Lewis to be Named April Officer of the Month

The Kona Crimestoppers will honor Jeremy Lewis as the April Officer of the Month at a luncheon on Wednesday, April 6 at Huggo’s Restaurant.  Officer Lewis is assigned to the Kona Patrol Division, and as of June 15, 2010, he’s worked with the Special Enforcement Unit.  Officer Lewis was instrumental in identifying and arresting suspects in a motor vehicle breakin in Kailua Village.   He provided enough investigative background information to ensure successful prosecution of the suspects, who had been involved in multiple vehicle breakins, mostly targeting tourists.  Officer Lewis’s superiors say these type of incidents…

Hawaii County Releases New Tsunami Damage Figures (w/video)

Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Quince Mento has provided new updates on damage estimates from the tsunami which hit Hawaii Island, primarily the Kona coast.  The tsunami was  generated by Japan’s 9.0 earthquake .  Businesses suffered over $11 million in damage, which included the Kona Inn, King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel,  and other businesses.  Private homes received around $2.52 million in damage, and county facilities and infrastructure had around $562,000 in damage, most notably Ali’i Drive’s surface, sidewalk, and sea wall.    Figures do not include the loss of contents to businesses or homes.  Figures also do…

Leeward Planning Commission Meets Thursday at King Kamehameha Hotel

The Leeward Planning Commission meeting set for Thursday is still on for King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.  The meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. in one of the conference rooms…without any carpeting, which had to be removed because of water damage from the tsunami. County of Hawaii is closing Ali’i Drive today, Monday,  from Sarona Road, near Hulihe’e Palace, to King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel  until around 5 p.m.    County Public Works will clean up the mess left on Ali’i Drive’s  from the tsunami.  If they close the road today they believe they can get the cleanup and preparations for repair work for the sidewalk and sea wall done and only inconvenience the public for one day.  The public’s cooperation and understanding is appreciated. County Assesses Overall Damage from Tsunami

From a Hawaii County Mayor’s Office Press Release: County of Hawai‘i Public Works crews worked quickly today to clear and reopen Kona roads to allow for detailed assessments of damage, and to clear the way for the public to return to most areas that were closed early this morning as a damaging tsunami approached the Hawaiian Islands. Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Administrator Quince Mento predicted the damage from the tsunami to homes, businesses, roads and other infrastructure in the County of Hawai‘i will total millions of dollars. Kona Brewers Fest Moves

Because of ongoing cleanup on Ali’i Drive and at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel and grounds, the Kona Brewers Festival on Saturday, March 12 will be held at Kona Brewing Company.   Kona Brewing Company is at the end of Pawai Place in Kona’s Old Industrial Area, one block mauka of Kuakini Highway.    Kona Brewing Company is within about a block of the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.    The event web site says the event is sold out and will go from 2:30 until 6:30 on Saturday, March 12.

Tributes Pour in for Kane

News filtered out early Wednesday  that cultural icon, artist, and south Kona resident Herb Kane had died.   He died at Kaiser Hospital on Oahu, following a fairly long illness that only worsened started February 22.  His wife Deon was by his side. Tributes starting pouring in yesterday from all over the world.   Senator Daniel Akaka, Senator Daniel K. Inouye, and Mayor Billy Kenoi all added their condolences and remembrances of Kane’s many contributions to the world of Hawaiian culture, art, and design.    Nanioa Thompson, a navigator on the voyaging canoe Hokulea, said Herb introduced Hawaiian…

Dr. Steven Edelman, a San Diego-based endocrinologist, will keynote a diabetes seminar today, Sunday, at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.  Edelman, a professor at University of California at San Diego, founded the nonprofit organization, Taking Control of Your Diabetes. Edelman says close to 90% of the diabetes cases in the United States are Type 2, formerly called adult onset diabetes.  Research now shows there is a gene that causes diabetes.  If one does not have the gene, one is much less likely to get diabetes.  If one has the gene, one does not necessarily get…
