Ironman Cannon to Sound at 6:30 a.m. Saturday

The Ironman Triathlon World Championship will be underway Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m., following a traditional Hawaiian blessing,  when Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi fires the starting cannon.  At 6:30 and 6:35, the professional men and then the women will start their swim in Kailua Bay.   At 7 a.m. Mayor Kenoi will again fire the cannon to get the 1850 age groupers, the amateurs off on their quest for personal achievement.  This year, competitors hail from 64 countries. Ironman to Give $128K to Kona Community Groups

The Ironman Foundation® Community Fund will give $128,000 in grant funding to non-profit groups on Hawai`i Island during the 2012 Ironman race season. Over the years, The Ironman Foundation has provided more than $800,000 to local non-profit groups and charitable initiatives on the Island of Hawai`it. The West Hawaii Lions Club consisting of the Hamakua, Waimea, Waikoloa, Kohala, Kaloko Branch, Kailua Kona, and Lions Club of Kona will be holding a charity walk- Walk for Vision and Hearing” to benefit the Hawaii Lions Foundation.   The Hawaii Lions Foundation, is the non-profit arm of Hawaii Lions. One of their programs, includes the “Uninsured/Underinsured” hearing and vision program for Hawaii school children. Police Say Woman in Horrific Thursday Crash Didn’t Die from Accident

Police have confirmed the identity of the 77-year-old woman killed Thursday afternoon, April 20, in Kona, in a four-car accident on Palani Road, Highway 190, between Hina Lani Street and Highway 180, Old Mamalahoa Highway.  Alehandra Lauro, known as Alice, was reportedly on her way to pick up her granddaughter from Makua Lani Christian School. Police on Monday had an autopsy performed and determined she died from a medical condition, not from the accident itself. Easter Sunrise Services Attract Hundreds

Hundreds of people, both residents and visitors, attended any number of Easter Sunrise services on this Easter Sunday, April 8.  There were services at dozens of individual churches around the island.  But in addition, there were ecumenical, multi-denomination services in Hilo, Waimea, and Kona. For Christians, Easter Sunday is the holiest of days, a more significant celebration even than Christmas.   It remembers the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead, three days after being crucified, which Christians remember on Good Friday. The Kona Town Meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, March 13, at 6 p.m., is being held at the Kona Kekuaokalani Gym.  The meeting was formerly scheduled to be at the Old Kona Airport’s Makae’o Events Pavilion. The agenda tonight includes a number of nonprofit agencies talking about their work–Advocats, Three Ring Ranch Exotic Animal Sanctuary, Family Support Services of West Hawaii, ARC of Kona.

Hawaii Island has lost a wonderful musician, good friend, and all around nice guy.  Bobby Koanui succumbed to complications of diabetes at the young age of  59. Bobby was a lifelong musician, starting as a drummer, but most on Hawaii Island knew him for his guitar, ukulele, and keyboards as well as his singing.  He was a member of Uncle George Naope’s backup band and played with him at Keauhou Beach Resort, in Japan, on the mainland, and throughout the state.   He also played and traveled with Kumu Etua Lopes. Plant shoppers were lined up well before the 8 a.m. start of the annual Kona Outdoor Circle Pua Plantasia Plant Sale, going on Saturday at Old Kona Airport’s Makae’o Events Pavilion.  More than 20 vendors are selling plants from air plants to palms to bromeliads and more.  Cathee Malapit from Cafe Fit is also on hand selling good food. Lifetime Hawaii Island resident Dru Mamo Kanuha has announced he will run for the newly-created County Council District 7, representing downtown Kailua Village and the Kona area from roughly Kainaliu north to Kona’s Old Airport.   Kanuha was born in Kealakekua and raised near the shore, in the ahupua’a of Holualoa.  His father, Jerome Kanuha, was also born and raised in Kailua-Kona.  His mother, Debbie Kanuha, was born in Pennsylvania, raised in Redondo Beach, California and has been in Kona for more than 40 years.   The Kanuha family has lived for generations in the Keopu…

Few Fireworks Displays on Hawaii Island

The cost of professional fireworks displays is significant.       That’s probably why other than at the resorts, there are no professional fireworks displays planned on the Big Island.  There will be professional displays at three major resort hotels:  the Four Seasons Hualalai, five miles north of Kailua-Kona Airport, at the Mauna Lani Bay Resort, and at the Mauna Kea Resort.  All the displays are slated for midnight this Saturday, December 31.

State DOT Director Outlines Hawaii Island Projects

Hawaii State Director of Transportation, Glenn Okimoto, was in Kona Thursday night to provide an update on DOT projects on the island.  He was invited by State Senator Josh Green, as part of a regular “talk story” for the community.  Around 30 people attended the meeting at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Kona Outdoor Circle is seeking plant vendors for its 34th  Pua Plantasia Plant Sale on Saturday, February 11, 2012,  at Old Kona Airport’s Makae’o Events Pavilion.
