Anyone interested in doing the Kona Underpants Run needs to be at Pacific Vibrations on Likana Lane, right across from Hulihee Palace, by 8 a.m. Thursday.  The best thing is to arrive around 7:30 to have time to make a charitable donation to the event. Founder Paul Huddle and 14-year participant Roch Frey said they decided after 3 years of seeing the event grow from just “a couple of guys” to dozens, then hundreds, they decided it would be important to give back to the Kona community by asking entrants to make a $20 or…

Ironman Triathlon World Championship is set for Saturday, October 13.  Many athletes are here now getting ready, and activities begin in earnest this week.  Athletes are on the road training, both biking and running, and swimming in Kailua Bay.  The driving public is especially warned to be careful, even though both athletes and the driver have an obligation to share the road. More than 5,000 volunteers will be involved in supporting the event and the athletes. They’re back.  The Ironman TriathlonWorld Championship is coming to Kona on Saturday, October 13, but athletes, their families, volunteers, and others interested in the event are already on the island.  For our economy, that’s a good thing.  The visitors are staying in hotel and condos and private rentals, they’re buying food at our stores, they’re patronizing restaurants.  Local chiropractors and massage therapists say they’re expecting an upward bump in business.  And businesses that cater to athletes–from The Club to Pacific Island Fitness to Bike Works and Cycle Station–are getting a special boost in business. Kona Peace Day debuts with suggested personal activities and free public events in conjunction with the annual United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21. The non-profit Pacific Rim Education Foundation (PREF) is organizing the inaugural event. Kona Peace Day begins at noon HST with A Minute of Silence, A Moment of Peace. The action is part of a worldwide wave of persons spending one minute of silence at noon in each time zone. A number of Kona houses of worship are invited to ring their bells at noon. The 53rd Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament invites visitors and kama’aina to its Billfish Parade this Sunday, August 12, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The parade will begin at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel and wind its way through Kailua Village ending at Hualalai Road. King Kamehameha Day festivities are continuing around Hawaii Island.  Yesterday, Saturday, hundreds of people crowded onto Moku Ola, Coconut Island, for Hilo’s Kamehameha Day Celebration.  There was music, food, traditional Hawaiian competitions and crafters galore.   This afternoon, Sunday, June 10, the public is invited to the lei draping of the Hilo King Kamehameha Statue.  The event will be at 5 p.m.  The Hilo King Kamehameha Statue, one of four in the state, is in Wailoa State Park.   Monday, June 11, is actually King Kamehameha Day, and that’s the day for the celebration in…

Sunday, June 10, is the monthly Kokua Kaiua event  in Kailua-Kona.  Ali’i Drive will be transformed into a pedestrian walkway between the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel and Hualalai Road.  There will be vendors and merchants set up along the street, and local merchants and restaurants will also welcome visitors. The annual King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade 2012 is set for Saturday, June 16, on Ali’i Drive Janet Wells Brown in historic Kailua Village.  The parade will feature more than 100 horses, as well as floats, marching bands, hula halau and the regal pa‘u riders on horseback. In addition to the parade queen and grand marshal’s equestrian units, all eight Hawaiian Islands will be represented by pa‘u equestrian units highlighting the colors and florals of each island. The Hawaii State Legislature has agreed to appropriate $7.5 million in bonds to build the first part of the new West Hawaii Community College at Palamanui, the Charles Schwab/Guy Lam development mauka of Kona Airport. Jim Lightner, Hospitality Division Chair says the current campus offers programs in nursing, business, management, hospitality and tourism, liberal arts, and early childhood education.  But one of the jewels is the 20-year-old culinary program.  They’ve had around 140 graduates with Associate Degrees–but dozens more with different kinds of certificates. Wood sculptor Jan Orbom’s specialty is birds, especially Hawaiian birds.  Rumley Art and Frame Gallery at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel is highlighting Orbom’s work, including several carving sof Hawaiian hawks and falcons,  until May 12. Orbom started his career in the arts as a motion picture set designer and has been working with wood for thirty years.  His sculpture and furniture is in homes and corporate offices around the world.    He and his wife Barbara  moved from Central California to Hawaii Island around 10 years ago.  Orbom works with a wide variety…

The Kailua Village Business Improvement District and several local organizations invite the public to a tsunami commemoration ceremony on Sunday, March 11, at 7 a.m.   March 11 is the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Japan and also came ashore in several locations along the West Hawaii coastline.   A ceremonial exchange of aloha between the citizens of Japan and the communities of West Hawaii will include blessings, Hawaiian chant, taiko drumming, floral offerings from canoes in Kailua Bay, and hula.   Some of the groups working on the project include…
