From Hawaii County Police: Big Island police have identified a man wanted for questioning in connection with a stabbing last week in Kailua-Kona. Police are looking for 29-year-old Tommy Eugan Howard. He is described as African-American with black hair and brown eyes. He may wear contact lenses that alter his eye color. He has a tattoo of a chain of musical notes that runs from his left shoulder down along his left arm. He sometimes goes by the names Casino, Tommy Washington and Cesar Waltz. Coast Guard Medevacs Ship Passenger to Kona Hospital

Coast Guard  aircrews piloting two MH-65 Dolphin helicopters  conducted a medical evacuation of a 35-year-old Polish woman suffering symptoms of pneumonia aboard the cruise ship The World , approximately 92 miles southwest of Kona, Big Island, Friday.   The Coast Guard  watchstanders in Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu were notified of the patient’s condition at approximately 9 p.m. Thursday   At the time, the vessel was 293 miles southwest of Kona, Big Island. Kona Hospital Now Offering Breast MRI

Kona Community Hospital’s new state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine now features the relatively new technique of breast imaging. Although proven effective in multiple recent clinical trials, it is new to KCH, and has not previously been performed in Kona. The procedure is safe, accurate, and cost-effective, costing about the same amount as a regular MRI exam. Waimea Maternal Care Meeting Draws Big Crowd

More than 150 people attended a community meeting in Waimea Tuesday night at Parker School Theater to talk about the Maternal Care Program at North Hawaii Community Hospital.  The program provides staff midwives, nurses, and obstetricians to work with pregnant women for both prenatal care and for the birth of their baby.  But  the program is losing money for North Hawaii Community Hospital…and more importantly, the hospital is having difficulty handling the volume of mothers who are showing up to give birth.  Several community members spoke, including the hospital’s guiding light, Earl Bakken.   Hospital…

County to Close Pools for Repairs–Starting Saturday!

Hawai‘i County’s swimming pools are receiving necessary safety improvements that will result in the temporary closure of five facilities, the Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday afternoon at 4:20 p.m.  The first closure will start Saturday.   Hilo’s NAS Pool and Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium, P?hala Swimming Pool, Konawaena Pool, and the Kona Community Aquatic Center (KCAC) each will be closed for an estimated 10 days while the upgrades are being made.   The Department of Parks and Recreation is replacing all of the drain covers at each facility with newer,…

Woman Dies Thursday in Crash at Hinalani and Palani

From Hawaii Police Department: A 77-year-old Kona woman was killed Thursday (April 19) after being involved in a four-vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 190, Palani Road,  and Hinalani Street in Kailua-Kona. Responding to a 2:58 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the woman was operating a 2011 Hyundai multi-purpose vehicle and traveling south on Route 190 when she rear-ended a 2006 Toyota four-door sedan being operated by a 34-year-old Waikoloa man. The Hyundai continued south and sideswiped a 1999 Jeep multi-purpose vehicle traveling north which was being operated by a 42-year-old woman…

Autopsy Shows Montana Man Died of Cardiac Arrest

Hawaii County Police have reported that 68-year-old Edward Woyciehowicz of Missoula, Montana, thought to have drowned, actually died of cardiac arrest.  An autopsy was conducted last week. The man was swimming at Kahalu’u Beach in Kona on Tuesday, April 10 when lifeguards spotted him floating in the water.   Lifeguards pulled him from the water and began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.   Hawaii County Fire Department personnel responded and continued CPR.   They took Woyciehowicz to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Kona Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash

From Hawaii Police Department: A 38-year-old Kona man died early Thursday morning (April 12) from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash Wednesday night (April 11) at the intersection of Henry Street and Palani Road in Kailua-Kona. The victim has been identified as Caleb Wolfson of Kailua-Kona. Responding to a 10:22 p.m. call Wednesday, police determined that Wolfson had been operating a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on Henry Street when he struck a concrete barrier and was ejected from the bike. Canadian Visitor Drowns Near Honokohau

From Hawaii Police Department: A Canadian man apparently drowned Wednesday morning (April 11) in waters off Kailua-Kona. The victim has been identified as 49-year-old  William Savage of Okotoks in the Canadian province of Alberta. At 11:20 a.m., Kona patrol officers responded to Kona Community Hospital, where they learned that Savage had been part of a scuba diving tour in waters north of Honokohau. A large surge reportedly knocked him off some rocks and into the water. When he failed to surface, tour members pulled him onto the boat, began CPR and took him to Honokohau…

From Hawaii Police Department: A Montana man apparently drowned Tuesday (April 10) in waters off Kona. The victim has been identified as 68-year-old Edward Woyciehowicz of Missoula, Montana. Just before noon, Kona patrol officers responded to a report of a possible drowning at Kahalu‘u Beach Park. Upon arrival, they learned that a lifeguard had seen a man floating and had pulled him out of the water and begun cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. Kona Pool to Reopen Today After Closure

The Kona Community Pool near Old Airport is open again today, Wednesday, after being closed because of cleaning and filtration problems.  But, they’re short lifeguards so the hours will be from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. today and Thursday.
