State Revokes Permits for Tour Company Involved in Teen Death

The State of Hawa’i Board of Land and Natural Resources (Land  Board) on Friday voted unanimously at its bi-weekly business meeting, to  approve a recommendation by the Hawai’i Division of State Parks to  terminate the revocable permit of Hawa’i Pack and Paddle LLC to conduct  commercial tours via kayak to the historic Ka’awaloa Flats section of  Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park .   The Division of State Parks recommended revocation based on violations of  permit conditions on July 4, 2012, that include the company’s exceeding  the number of allowed customers per tour, exceeding the maximum…

Army Still Wants Copter Training Around PTA

The public has until August 23 to comment on the latest draft environmental assessment for the Army’s plan to do high altitude helicopter training over Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The Army hopes to get State Land Board approval in September to be able to conduct the training on six landing zones on the mountains in October, before it has to ship its nearly 100 helicopters to Afghanistan in November. Big Island Press Club Gives Annual Good/Bad Awards

The Big Island Press Club has awarded its 14th annual negative Lava Tube Award to the State Board of Land and Natural Resources  for running afoul of the state’s open meetings law. According to the club, the award recognizes the year’s most notable offense against the public’s right to know.  The state Office of Information Practices ruled late last year that the Land Board violated state law when it proposed amendments to state boating rules. Land Board OK’s Thirty Meter Telescope

The Board of Land and Natural Resources unanimously approved putting the Thirty Meter Telescope, the largest ever to be built, on Mauna Kea.   The telescope would be the 14th on the mountain.  But the board also granted opponents’ request for a contested case hearing on the Thirty Meter Telescope, giving them one last chance to make their case before a hearing officer and get a final review by the land board. Land Board Meets Friday to Vote on TMT

The State Board of Land and Natural Resources will meet Friday to consider the application to build the new Thirty Meter Telescope near the summit of Mauna Kea.  A consortium of California and Canadian universities is applying for the permit to build the largest ever telescope on conservation land.  If approved, organizers expect to begin construction on the $1 Billion project late this year and finish by 2018. DLNR Holds Hearings on TMT

Department of Land and Natural Resources staff  held hearings last Thursday in Hilo and Friday in Kona about the proposed conservation district use application for the Thirty Meter Telescope.  More than 100 people attended in Hilo; 44 testified.  In Kona Friday night, 28 out of the 75 attendees testified.   Opponents included the Sierra Club, concerned over past or possible damage to natural resources, and Native Hawaiians, concerned about treating Mauna Kea with proper respect.  There were also those objecting to any government involvement on Mauna Kea.  Proponents included Puna Geothermal’s Mike Kaleikini, who felt the…
