There will be a free tour of Daifukuji Temple  on Sunday,  October 21. It will begin at 2:00  pm and last approximately two  hours.   The tour  will be guided by Rev. Jiko Nakade and Clear Houn Englebert. Berdon Now Out on Bail Despite Probation Violation, Monday Fatalities

Alfred Berdon III is out of jail on bail.  Thursday he was in court to answer a charge of violating probation for a 2007 conviction for a road range incident, in which Berdon punched another man in the face causing him to lose his eye.  For that incident, Berdon was initially sentenced to a year in jail, to be served on weekends, and five years probation.  He was in court for a DUI in 2011, which violated his five years of probation.   The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that although County Prosecutors asked for no bail,…

Monday Truck Driver to Stay in Jail on Other Charges

Major Sam Thomas of Hawaii Police confirmed that Alfred Berdon III, the driver of the truck who was responsible for the deaths of two women Monday and serious injuries to five others, will stay in jail.  He appeared in court Thursday morning on a separate motion to revoke his probation, which was granted.  Berdon will be in State custody.  Berdon was convicted of a DUI in August, 2012, and of a previous road rage incident in 2007 and had been on probation. From Hawaii Police Department, Tuesday morning, September 11, 8:30 a.m. A 61-year-old woman and a 54-year-old woman, both from Kea’au, died Monday (September 10) from injuries they received in a two- vehicle crash on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 19), .2 miles east of the 39-mile-marker in the Hamakua District. The victim’s were identified as Josefina B. Visaya, 61, and Patrocinia R. Cadang, 54, both of a Kea?au address. From Hawaii Police Department: A 17-year-old Pa’auilo boy died Friday (September 7) from injuries he received in a motor vehicle/pedestrian crash at the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway (Route 19) and Pa’auilo Makai Road in the Hamakua District. The victim was identified as John DeLuz, of a Pa’auilo address. Responding to a 5:32 p.m. call, Hamakua patrol and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers determined that the victim had exited a Hele-On bus that was stopped on the mauka side of the road, ran in front of the bus and ran out into the highway. Hawaii Police have issued an alert that HELCO has removed the power pole from Palani Road and it is now open to traffic, as of 5:49 a.m. Thursday. Original story, 5:15 a.m.: A power pole is down in front of Kona Christian Academy at 74-4907 Palani Road, and Palani Road is closed between Route 180 (Mamalahoa Highway, where the old Hawaiian Gardens was) and Hao Kuni Street until the situation is resolved. Holualoa Fire Destroys Two-Story Home

As reported on Big Island News Center and LAVA 105.3 f.m. Wednesday morning, a raging fire destroyed a home in Holualoa.  The two-story wooden dwelling was between Holualoa School and the junction of Hualalai Road and Mamalahoa Highway, mauka up a private road.  Three adults lived in the home but no injuries were reported. The alarm came at 5:43 a.m.  Even then, thick black smoke and flames were visible for miles.  When the fire department arrived, they found the house fully engulfed in flames.  The house was completely destroyed. HELCO Pole Replacement Coming to Keauhou Thursday

The County of Hawaii Public Works Department says HELCO is replacing a utility pole in North Kona on Mamalahoa Highway near mile marker 1 in Keauhou mauka, on Thursday, August 30.   One lane will be closed during the replacement work.  Aloha Security will direct traffic between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.   The work is planned to be complete within one day.   For additional information, please contact HELCO at 327-0558

Motorcycle Rider Hits Car, Is Seriously Injured

Hawai’i  Fire Department’s Waikoloa Station responded to a motorcycle crash on Mamalahoa Highway, Highway 190, just before 10 p.m. Friday night.  The crash was near the 17 Mile Marker on the Waimea side of Pu’uanahulu. Fire/rescue personnel found a 41-year-old man on the road unresponsive.  He had been driving the motorcycle.  Witnesses said he lost control of his bike and struck an oncoming car.  The motorcycle rider was transported to North Hawaii Hospital in critical condition and later evacuated to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu. Hawaii Police said Thursday was not a good day.  A bicyclist was hit and killed on Akoni Pule Highway Thursday, and later in the afternoon a multi-car accident left one man dead and the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway closed for several hours. A 52-year-old male  bicyclist from Kailua-Kona was traveling east on Akoni Pule Highway around Mile Marker 19, between Old Coast Guard Rd and Kokoiki Rd., just after 1 p.m. when it appeared he was struck and killed by a 15-year-old female driver accompanied by a 48-year-old female passenger in a 2003 Nissan pickup truck.…
