The County of Hawai’i held a blessing Tuesday morning, October 16, to commence $4.15 million worth of improvements to the State-owned slaughterhouse in Pa’auilo. Funds for the improvements were appropriated by the State Legislature and released by the Governor directly to the County of Hawai‘i to implement improvements that will help secure the future of Hawai‘i Island’s grass-fed beef industry.   “If the rancher cannot ranch and the farmer cannot farm, we’re all in trouble. The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), the state’s tourism agency, in partnership with the National Football League (NFL), has announced the designation of a Pro Bowl Committee comprised of Hawaii business and community members. An estimated 150 people (including a few dozen Ka‘u High students) participated in the ground blessing for the Kau District Gym & Shelter Wednesday morning on the school campus. The 43,000 square foot gymnasium and multi-purpose facility will be situated upon approximately five acres of the Ka‘u High and Pahala Elementary School campus. Health issues related to the production of geothermal energy are a concern for many island residents. In what is excellent news for Hawaii Island, Hawaiian Airlines has told the United States Department of Transportation it wants to add a daily nonstop flight between Kona and Tokyo International Airport, also known as Harada Airport.   But there’s no guarantee the DOT will grant the request. Japan Airlines used to have a daily flight between Kona and Tokyo’s Narita Airport.  JAL cancelled that flight at the end of October, 2010.  Since then, the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce leadership and local hotels have been concerned about Kona International Airport being able to maintain its “international”…

The County of Hawai‘i has been recognized for excellence in financial reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, also known as the CAFR.   Stephen J. Gauthier, spokesman for the association which serves about 17,500 government financial professionals, said the CAFR prepared by the county’s Finance Department has earned a certificate of achievement  for clearly communicating the County’s financial story. Three members of the Hawai’i Police Department’s Special Response Team received the Silver Medal of Valor on Thursday, August 30,  for barricading an explosive ordnance in February, preventing two days worth of rolling blackouts over Super Bowl weekend. On the evening of Saturday, February 4, an old grenade was discovered on the grounds of Hawai’i Electric Light Company’s main power plant in Hilo on Kanoelehua.
