Police ID Puna Man Killed in Crash Last Thursday

Big Island police have identified the man who died Thursday, October 11, from a two-vehicle crash on Highway 11 in front of Hirano Store as 57-year-old John K. Isabel Jr. of Glenwood.   A van driven by a 33-year-old woman was heading towards Hilo when it slammed into Isabel’s station wagon.  The van flew in the air and flipped over, landing on its roof.   Bystanders helped extricate the woman from the vehicle.   When Hawaii County Fire Department personnel arrived she was sitting near the van.  They transported her to Hilo Medical Center with chest,…

Kurtistown Man Charged with Car Theft

From Hawaii Police Department: Big Island police have charged a 30-year-old Kurtistown man with a variety of offenses following his arrest on Monday (October 8) in Puna for allegedly stealing a car. On August 17, at about 6:30 a.m., police received a report of a sighting of a vehicle that had been reportedly stolen from a home in Kurtistown. The stolen vehicle was recovered but the driver fled prior to the officers’ arrival. Claude Keone Krause was identified as the driver and police were seeking him for questioning. From Hawaii Police Department: Big Island police are investigating a reported robbery that occurred early Saturday morning in Puna. On October 6 at about 3 a.m., a 67-year-old Volcano man reported that he was filling water containers at the county water spigots in Kurtistown when he was confronted by a lone male, who initially started a conversation with him. The suspect reportedly assaulted the victim and stole his wallet. Another male suspect appeared and was seen rummaging through the victim’s parked vehicle. Both suspects fled the area on foot. Drunk Driver in Hawai’i Volcanoes Park Crash Gets 2 Years in Plea Deal

The driver in a deadly single-vehicle accident that occurred in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park last year was sentenced Friday (October 5) in U.S. District Court to 24 months in prison for negligent homicide.    Julien Quiocho had reached the plea deal in June.  The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.  Part of the plea deal was that if the Federal Judge sentenced Quiocho to a longer sentence than the two years, Quiocho could have withdrawn his plea.   In the early morning of June 12, 2011, Hilo resident  Quiocho, then 19,…

Spear Fisherman Dies at Coconut Island Friday

Hawaii Police Department reported that on Friday, October 5, at approximately 11:20 a.m., officers responded to Coconut Island for a reported spear fisherman in distress.   Fire Department Rescue personnel were already on scene.  A 77-year-old man had been found on the bottom of the ocean and was brought to the shore by bystanders.  By the time rescue personnel arrived, he was out of the water and unresponsive.  The man was transported to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Coast Guard Evacuates Man from Navy Ship Near Hilo

A Coast Guard Crew on Wednesday medically evacuated a contractor who was aboard the United States Navy’s Soderman, which was off the coast of Hawaii Island.  The Navy notified the Coast Guard Wednesday morning at 8:50 a.m. that there was a man aboard the USNS Soderman who had dizziness and dehydration.  The Coast Guard’s flight surgeon recommended evacuation.   The Coast Guard launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter at 10:40 a.m., with a C130 Hercules to provide cover for the Dolphin crew.  The Dolphin was able to get the contractor aboard the helicopter and they airlifted…

From Hawaii Police Department: A 34-year-old Hilo man who nearly drowned over the weekend died Thursday (September 27) from the incident. Chris Broussard of Hilo and his 9-year-old son were snorkeling in a tide pool in the Brown’s Beach area Sunday morning (September 23) when a large wave swept the boy out of the tide pool. Bruoussard jumped into the ocean in an attempt to save the boy. By the time bystanders were able to pull the child to safety, Broussard was floating face down in the water. Tsuji in Hilo Medical Center with Pneumonia

State Representative Clift Tsuji (District 3 – South Hilo, Panaewa, Puna, Keaau, Kurtistown) has confirmed that he was admitted to Hilo Medical Center last week with pneumonia, but he is expected to be released in a few days and to make a full recovery.  He has been able to keep up with emails, correspondence and other work during his hospital stay.   Rep. An assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo has received a career development award of $675,000 from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This is a first for UH Hilo, and the only award of this type from the NCI to be given to a Native Hawaiian in the entire UH System. Dana-Lynn T. Police have initiated a Corners Inquest following the death of a 69-year-old man. On Wednesday, September 12,  at approximately 10:35 p.m., Ka’u Patrol Officers and Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a structure fire on Kamaoa Road in Waiohinu. Upon arrival, emergency personnel extinguished a fire in the kitchen area of the residence. A male party who was assisting the homeowner in attempting to extinguish the blaze prior to arrival of Fire Department personnel was found unresponsive outside the residence. From Hawaii Police Department, Tuesday morning, September 11, 8:30 a.m. A 61-year-old woman and a 54-year-old woman, both from Kea’au, died Monday (September 10) from injuries they received in a two- vehicle crash on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 19), .2 miles east of the 39-mile-marker in the Hamakua District. Two people were injured and a house in Hilo destroyed in a fire early Sunday morning.   Hawaii Fire Department was called out just after 5 a.m. to a home on Alani Street.  When they arrived, they found the single story residence fully engulfed in flames.   The home’s occupants were out of the house when firefighters arrived.   A man was taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation; a woman, although injured, refused to be taken to the hospital.   The 1600-square-foot home was a single story, post-and-pier residence with…
