Hilo Medical Center, Kona Hospital Achieve Trauma Level III Certification

Both Kona Community Hospital and Hilo Medical Center are now Level III Trauma Centers.  The only higher level Trauma Center in the State is Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.  When Governor Neil Abercrombie is in Hilo on Tuesday, August 2, he will recognize both hospitals at an event at Hilo Medical Center. The hospitals had to go through a rigorous, two-year process to achieve certification.  The American College of Surgeons sets standards for the certification, and the State designated funds to the hospitals to help them go through the process.  The Hawaii Department of Health…

Man Killed, 5 Hurt in Sunday Night Pepeekeo Crash

From Hawaii Police Department: Police said alcohol was  a factor in an accident at 10:35 p.m. Sunday.  A 41 year-old Hilo man was killed following the crash on the Hawaii Belt Road, Route 19, half mile north of the 11-mile marker in Pepeeko. The man, identified as John R. Lewis of Pepeekeo, was driving  a 1996 Infinity sedan traveling north on the Hawaii Belt Road when he crossed the centerline and collided with a 2005 Honda SUV traveling south. Kurtistown Man Dies in Sunday Morning Crash

From Hawaii Police Department: A 25-year-old Kurtistown man was killed early Sunday morning in a two-car collision on Highway 130 at the 4-mile marker in Keaau. Ikeole Filoteo was pronounced dead at 6:40 a.m. at Hilo Medical Center. Police responding to a 3:34 a.m. call determined that Filoteo was driving a 1999 Mazda 4-door sedan south on the Keaau-Pahoa Highway when he crossed the centerline and collided with a northbound 2008 Toyota 2-door sedan. California Man Dies in West Hawaii Bike Crash

From Hawaii Police Department: A California man has died from injuries sustained when he fell off his bicycle. On July 14, Kona patrol officers responded to a 1:18 a.m. report of a crashing sound on the 75-6100 block of Alii Drive and found a man lying next to a bicycle. The victim, identified as 24-year-old Anthony Hernandez of Simi Valley, California, had been riding the bike when he lost control, fell and struck his head on the pavement. Police Investigating Laupahoehoe Shooting

Hawaii Police report they are investigating a shooting reported at about 2 p.m. Thursday at Laupahoehoe Point. The victim, believed to be a woman, was flown by Fire Department helicopter to Hilo Medical Center. No information about the victim’s condition was available. A handgun was found at the scene, and police are investigating whether the shooting was a homicide attempt or self-inflicted.

Body of Man Swept Away in Stream Found

Hawaii County Fire Department reports that on Wednesday, rescue crews recovered  the body of a man who was swept away by a flash flood in the Kawainui Stream in Onomea. Ernesto Combes, 43, of Nanawale Estates had been missing since Sunday night, when the flood carried him away from a site near a bridge on the scenic route. Combes’ girlfriend, Cathy Balicoco, 45, had also been caught unaware by the rushing waters, but she managed to grab a large rock and hold on until she was rescued. Driver in Saturday Accident Dies of Injuries

From Hawaii Police Department: An 18-year-old Waimea man died Wednesday (July 13) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Saturday (July 9) on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 19) .1 mile east of the 55-mile marker in Waimea. The victim was identifed as Grayson E. K. W. Andaya of a Kamuela address. Responding to a 4:32 a.m. call, South Kohala patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2002 Toyota four-door sedan and traveling east on Mamalahoa Highway when he ran off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole and wire fence.…

Police Identify Man Killed on Puna Cliff

From Hawaii Police Department: A 22-year-old California man died Monday after being swept into the ocean in Puna on Sunday. The victim has been identified as Paul Tam-Mai of Sunnyvale, California. Tam-Mai was climbing on a rocky cliff at the end of Paradise Drive in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision around 3 p.m. Sunday (July 10) when a wave knocked him into the ocean and carried him about 100 yards out to sea. Search Continues for Man Swept Away in River

Hawaii Police Department have identified the 45-year-old man swept away by Kawanui Stream Sunday night as Ernesto Combes of Pahoa.  Combes and some companions had been fishing for prawns.  Combes has not been found and the search is continuing. The original report said Hawaii Fire Department’s Central Station personnel responded to a report Sunday night of a missing  male.  According to others at the scene, he and a female companion had been in Kawanui Stream when a flash flood swept him away.   The call came in at 9:27 p.m.  Medics took the female to Hilo…

Police Seek Cause of Diver’s Death

From Hawaii Police Department: Big Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest case in connection with the death of a diver over the weekend in waters off Hilo. At 9:12 a.m., South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of an unresponsive man at Waiolena Beach Park in the Keaukaha area. A 52-year-old man identified as Mickey McGuire of Kea’au had been scuba diving and was found unresponsive 25-feet underwater. Fire Department rescue personnel took him to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:42 a.m.

Boy from Pohoiki Pier Accident Coming Home Soon

The eight year old boy who fell into the water unconscious from Pohoiki Pier on June 26 is expected to make a full recovery.   Ake-Akamai Chaul was airlifted to Queen’s Medical Center after life saving efforts by family members, bystanders, and paramedics.  Doctors say he should be able to go home soon.
