Lalamilo Homes Ground Breaking Set for Wednesday

On Wednesday, there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase of the Lalamilo Hawaiian Homes Subdivision in Waimea.   Governor Neil Abercrombie and Mayor Billy Kenoi will be part of the event (following the blessing and groundbreaking for the new Ka’u Gym earlier that morning).  Jobie M. K. Two Hilo Schools Get Funding for Roof, Road

The State Department of Education has  allocated funding for improvements at two Hawaii Island schools, Ha’aheo Elementary in North Hilo and Kalaniana’ole Elementary and Intermediate Schools, and Governor Neil Abercrombie has released the funds–$467,000.   The projects include road upgrades at Haaheo Elementary and a new roof for one of Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate’s buildings.   State Senator Malama Solomon (D-Waimea, Hamakua, Hilo) said she was pleased the Governor had released funding and commented on how important it is to invest in school infrastructure.   The construction start date has not yet been announced.

Hawaii County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi issued a statement on Monday, August 20, saying that Hawaii County’s “volunteers,” those who work on election day and get a stipend of around $85, will be paid extra for their work on Saturday, August 11.  Because of the problems experienced in opening Hawaii County’s polling sites on time, and uncertainty over how many sites actually opened late, Governor Neil Abercrombie kept Hawaii Island’s polling places open until 7:30 p.m. instead of the usual 6 p.m. closing time. Hawaii County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi got a swift response to her letter to Governor Neil Abercrombie Monday morning, asking that he  initiate an independent review of the Hawaii State Office of Elections and have the Lieutenant Governor’s office take over the function of State Elections for the General Election in November, 2012.  Within hours, Lieutenant Governor Brian Schatz responded, saying his office by law has no jurisdiction over State elections. Governor Neil Abercrombie on Wednesday released $7.5 million in bonds for the construction of two key buildings at the new Palamanui College.  The campus is located mauka and just north of Kona International Airport. This, combined with the $9.68 million donated to the university in January of 2012 by Palamanui LLC, a partnership between Hunt Companies Hawai’i and Charles R. Schwab, brings the total funding on hand to close to $17.2 million for West Hawai’i’s first permanent campus. Governor Neil Abercrombie has issued a proclamation to extend polling hours on Hawai’i Island only by an hour and a half today. Polling locations in the Counties of Maui, Kaua’i and Honolulu will close at the 6 p.m.; polling locations in Hawai’i County will close at 7:30 p.m. The Governor’s statement acknowledges that this morning, there were multiple polling stations on Hawai’i Island that opened later than scheduled. UH Hilo University Village Underway

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday for the University of Hawai`i at Hilo’s University Village Phase I.  The project, located on 33 acres fronting the University’s main entrance on Kawili Street, will feature approximately 300 student housing units in apartments and suite-style residence halls.   The new units are the first to be built on campus since 1989, and are being financed by a $32 million appropriation of G.O. and Revenue Bonds approved by the legislature.   UH Hilo currently has just 600 housing units on campus serving an enrollment in excess of 4,100.    “This project…

Castle & Cooke has filed a transfer application with the Public Utilities Commission to sell Lana’i.   Castle & Cooke owns approximately ninety-seven percent of the island of Lana‘i.  The reason for the filing with the PUC is because as part of the transfer, the water utilities, which are under PUC regulation, are included.   The buyer is Lawrence Ellison, co-founder and chief executive officer of Oracle Corporation.   Ellison was rumored to be interested, and has spent time on the island.   Ellison owns several spectacular houses, including a traditional Japanese-style estate on several acres in…

Governor Neil Abercrombie announced Judge Richard W. Pollack as his nomination for Associate Justice to the Supreme Court. This nomination fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice James E.
