Senator Kokubun Resigns

State Senator Russell Kokubun officially resigned Tuesday, December 28.  Kokobun has represented Senate District 2 (South Hilo, Ka’u, Volcano, Puna) since 2000.   Governor Neil Abercrombie named Kokubun  Director of the State Department of Agriculture.    Although Kokubun must be confirmed by the State Senate, it is assumed that he will be. The Hawaii County Democrats will submit the names of three candidates as replacements for Kokubun to Governor Abercrombie.   Hawaii County Democratic Chair Steve Pavao has said those wishing to be considered to replace Kokubun must submit their applications no later than midnight, January 3, 2011…

Abercrombie Names Two New State Senators

Governor Neil Abercrombie late today announced the appointment of Malama Solomon, PhD to represent Senate District 1, representing Waimea, Hamakua, and Hilo.   Solomon has  spent 18 years in public service, as a Trustee with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and 16 years in the state Senate.  Dr. Solomon is the owner and manager of a 1,600-acre ranch in Waimea, North Kohala and Hamakua.  Dr. Solomon also serves as the Kakau `Olelo (historian) to the Beamer-Solomon Halau O Po`ohalu.  She holds a Ph.D. in Education from Oregon State University, a MA in Education and BA in…

Hannemann to Head Hotel Association

Former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann has ben named president of the Hawaii Hotel & Lodging Association.  Hannemann waged an unsuccessful bid against Neil Abercrombie for the Democratic nomination for Governor. Hannemann will take the new job January `1.  He succeeds Murra Towill, who retired in August.

Gov Abercrombie Signs Off on Oahu Rail EIS

Governor Neil Abercrombie has signed off on the Environmental Impact Statement for Oahu’s rail project.   His conclusions were that economic, social, and environmental risks have been properly addressed, as required by law.   Governor Abercrombie said he continues to support a rail transit system on Oahu.   The EIS had been given to former Governor Linda Lingle for approval in June, but she refused to sign, expressing concern about the financial impact of the rail system.   However, the EIS is not intended to address the finances.  The rail system is expected to cost $5.5 billion.   Funding is…

Abercrombie Names Directors of Transportation and Defense

Gov. Neil Abercrombie today named Maj. Gen. Darryll Wong his nominee to lead the state’s Department of Defense and Glenn Okimoto to lead the Department of Transportation. All director appointments are subject to Senate confirmation once the Legislature begins the 2011 session. Abercrombie also named several deputy directors, including  three who will serve under Okimoto in the Department of Transportation: Randy Grune, deputy in charge of harbors; Ford Fuchigami, deputy in charge of airports; and Jadine Urasaki, deputy in charge of capital improvements projects. Abercrombie, Schatz, in Waimea Today

Around 300 people joined Governor Neil Abercrombie and Lt Governor Brian Schatz to celebrate their inauguration yesterday at Pahala Plantation in Ka’u..  In what Abercrombie noted was a good sign, an i’o , the Hawaiian hawk, flew overhead..  Abercrombie and Schatz and first Lady Nancy Carraway invite the public to celebrate the inauguration today in Waimea at Kuhio Hale, Hawaiian Homes Hall, from 4 p.m. until 6.  The slam poet Kealoha, who performd at the inauguration, will also be there.   The public is asked to bring donations for the food bank.

Abercrombie Names Kokubun to Head of Agriculture Department

Governor Elect Neil Abercrombie today named five Directors and two Deputy Directors for his administration.   Hawaii Island State Senator Russell Kokubun (D-Hilo) will head the Department of Agriculture, with Jimmy Nakatani as Agriculture Deputy Director.  Nakatani was president of Hawaii Farm Bureau and was director of the State Agriculture Department from 1995 to 2003.   Kokubun has been State Senator since 2000, after serving on Hawaii County Council. Abercrombie Names Sen Takamine as Labor Director

Governor Elect Neil Abercrombie named Hawaii Island State Senator Dwight Takamine to the position of Director of the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, with Audrey Hidano as its Deputy Director.   Takamine has been in the State Legislature for 26 years, as a State House Representative and State Senator representing Hilo, Honoka’a, and Waimea.  Hidano has been in the private construction business and was Deputy Director of Department of Labor from 2000 to 2002.    Abercrombie also named Kalbert Young as the Budget and Finance Director.   Young is currently Finance Director for Maui County.   …
