The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawai?i Education and Research Center (NHERC) in Honoka`a has opened registration for its Fall 2012 Lifelong Learning program. Back by popular demand are both the Basic and Advanced Grant Writing classes being held in East Hawai’i. The Basic class begins later this month and will cover the grant writing process from how to write a compelling statement of need to what funders look for in proposals. The Advanced class in September will teach students how to fine-tune their grant writing skills to gain an edge on the competition.…

Vision Van Offering Free Eye Exams on Hawaii Island

The Retina Institute of Hawaii is joining with the Hawaii Island Lions Clubs to help Hawaii Island residents get their vision screened.   Young Brothers has, at no charge, shipped the Project Vision Van from Oahu to Hawaii Island.  It’s a 35 foot mobile opthalmologist office.  The van offers screenings to detect cataracts, glaucoma, retina disease, even diabetes. The van will be here on Hawaii Island offering screenings from August 26 through September 18, with Lions Clubs members specially trained to assist in the process. From Hawaii Police Department: The Hawai‘i Police Department will hold a community meeting on Tuesday, August 16, from 12-2 p.m. at the North Hawai‘i Education and Research Center (NHERC). Governor Neil Abercrombie was the keynote speaker Thursday at the launch of new services to be offered in Honoka'a at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center, which is part of the University of Hawaii at Hilo.   The project was a community effort, with the Hawai'i Department of Labor and Industrial Relations helping coordinate bringing in state and county agencies, federal government, and nonprofit agencies  to offer services locally.  In his talk, the Governor stressed that this is an example of helping make government less Oahu-centric, and it is bringing services to the people.  Thursday…

North Hawaii Research Center Adds Government Services

Governor Neil Abercrombie will be in Honoka’a Thursday to officially kick off some new services at North Hawaii Education and Research Center.  The University of Hawaii at Hilo took over the old Honoka’a Hospital about five years ago to create North Hawaii Education and Research Center.  Their mission is to offer higher education outreach in Honoka’a, so that the population of Hamakua (approximately 19,000) and surrounding areas could more easily avail themselves of university classes without the hour-long drive to Hilo.  That is still their primary mission.   They offer for-credit courses;  lifelong learning (generally non-credit)…
