Police Arrest 29 for DUI Week Ending February 5

From Hawaii Police Department: During the week of January 30, 2012, through February 5, 2012, Big Island police arrested 29 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21. So far this year, there have been 131 DUI arrests compared with 136 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.7 percent. From Hawaii Police Department: Three men and two women were arrested for narcotics offenses Friday (January 6) after a coordinated effort between the Area II Ice Task Force and North Kohala Community Policing and Patrol Officers led to execution of two unrelated search warrants, each stemming from traffic stops. Police stopped a pickup truck driven by 26-year-old Kaipo Botelho-Matthey of Hawi on Union Mill Road in Kapa?au because of a defective tail light. Chief Harry S. Kubojiri has announced four promotions and three new transfers within the Hawai’i police Department. Richard Sherlock, who is now lieutenant in charge of the Area I Vice Section, will become the captain in charge of Kona Patrol effective December 16. That position has been vacant since Captain Samuel Kawamoto was transferred to the Criminal Intelligence Unit/Internal Affairs in October. Police ID Man Killed in Kohala Car Crash

From Hawaii Police Department: A 25-year-old Hawi man died Saturday (December 3) from injuries he sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Akoni Pule Highway (Route 270) .4 miles north of the 8-mile marker in the North Kohala District. The driver was identified as Reed I.S. Shiraishi of a Hawi address. Man Dies in Akoni Pule One Car Crash

A one car crash early Saturday morning on Akoni Pule Highway in North Kohala resulted in the death of a man believed to be around 25 years old.  When firefighters and paramedics responded to a 2:12  a.m. call Saturday morning,  they found one car that had been traveling north on Akoni Pule Highway and apparently drifted off the road.   The vehicle had rolled multiple times and was approximately 100 feet from where it left the road and around 40 feet from the side of the road.    Fire personnel reported the young man was still in…

HELCO Explains Kohala Power Outage to 2,000

Hawaiian Electric Light Company says there was a power outage Sunday evening, November 27, that interrupted  power for around 2,000 customers in North Kohala.  The power outage started around 8:15 p.m. and was so HELCO crews could repair some downed power lines on Kohala Mountain Road, which had experienced serious winds on Saturday, up to 45 miles an hour.  Power was restored around 11:15 p.m.

Kohala Mountain Road Reopened After Wednesday Crash

Kohala Mountain Road was closed for 90 minutes or so due to an accident near the 8 mile marker.   The road closure notification came in at 11:30, and the road reopened just before 1 p.m.   Police have not provided any information about the accident.

Fire Destroys Kapa’au Home

Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded to a structure fire in North Kohala Monday morning.  Fire investigators are seeking the cause of the fire, which pretty much destroyed the home on Union Mill Road. Firefighters got the call at 6:50 a.m. Monday.  They were able to extinguish the fire in the single-family residence within an hour. Family members  living in the home all escaped, and there were no injuries.  Firefighters noted the family had an emergency plan and had a designated area to meet int he event of a fire. Man Nearly Drowns at Pololu

Hawaii Island firefighters rescued a 59-year-old man after he nearly drowned Friday at Pololu Valley Beach in North Kohala. The man was unfamiliar with the ocean currents.  Fire officials said  friends and bystanders pulled  him out of the water about 1:15 p.m.. Firefighters treated him at the scene and the County’s Fire and Rescue Helicopter  flew the man in serious condition to North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Police Report Over 1100 Arrested Countywide for DUI

During the week of October 10, 2011, through October 16, 2011, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
