Mayor Hilo Health Fest a Success–Second in Kona Saturday

Hundreds of people, mostly local  residents but some visitors too, attended the Mayor’s 2011 Health Fest at Hilo Bayfront on Saturday, August 6.  The Mayor has said from before his election that he wanted to focus on improving the health and well-being of island citizens, including and especially keiki.  The free family event was the first of two–there will be another Health Fest on Saturday, August 13 at Kona’s Old Airport.  The event included fitness and fun activities, including zumba, zumba gold, tai chi, line dancing, aerobic, and lots of activities for the keiki.  There…

Senior Softball Series Concludes Thursday

Hawaii County has been hosting the state’s senior softball championships since Tuesday.  After two days of competition, members from all 52 teams took part in a gigantic luau at Kona’s Old Airport Makae’o Events Pavilion.  And Thursday, the final games will be played to determine the championships in each division. Games start at 7:45 a.m. at Kona’s Old Airport fields and continue into the early to mid afternoon. State Senior Softball Championships in Kona This Week

Fifty two teams from around the state will be at Kona’s Old Airport this week to compete in the Hawaii State Senior Softball Tournament.  The tournament kicks off at 8 a.m. Tuesday with opening ceremonies, and then the games begin.   All players are 55 or older. There are six divisions with 108 total games.    There are a total of 21 teams from Hawaii Island, 14 from Oau, 9 from Maui, and 8 from Kaua’i.     Five Hawaii Island teams are in the top three divisions.   Three teams from Hawaii Island will compete in the A…

Kona Derby Girls On a Roll

The Kona Tsunami Slammers beat up on each other in a “Black and Blue” exhibition bout held at Old Airport’s hockey rink Saturday night.  The Slammers, a new member of the Hilo-based Paradise Roller Girls (PRG) league, split into “Black” and “Blue” teams for the nine-on-nine scrimmage.  Roughly 150 fans watched as the Black team bested the Blue team, 114-67.
