First Pahoa Plan Meet This Saturday

An important Pahoa community gathering this Saturday, March 24, at 3:00 p.m. will launch the Pahoa Regional Town Center Plan (“the Pahoa Plan”) and a Community Input Survey.   “The Pahoa Plan” will be part of the overall, already-approved Puna Community Development Plans.  The County General Plan in 2005 included provisions for individual communities to customize the plans for their areas.  The Community Development Plans are adopted by the County Council and made part of the General Plan, which means they become law.   The sub-plans, such as “The Pahoa Plan” will not be reviewed by…

State Republicans Vote for Presidential Candidate Tuesday

The four major Republican candidates for President have been campaigning in Hawaii.   The campaigns have included “robo calls” to Hawaii voters, urging them to take part in the Hawaii State Republican Party caucuses the evening of Tuesday, March 13 and  calls from supporters urging votes for their candidate.  Last Friday, Mitt Romney held a teleconference call to answer Hawaii voters’ questions.   This is the first time in history that the Hawaii Republican Party has held Presidential Caucuses.    In years past, the GOP’s Hawaii leaders have selected the delegates.   This is seen as a way…

County Urges Coaches to Learn “Positive Coaching”

The Positive Coaching Alliance — Big Island– and the County of Hawai`i Parks and  Recreation Division will host two “Double-Goal Coach” Level 1 Workshops.  The first workshop is scheduled or Saturday, September 24 at Pahoa Community Center from 10 am until noon. The workshops are offered at a cost of $5 to cover the cost of the workbook.  Participants will receive a two-year certification for all Park and Recreation Leagues and Youth Leagues.    County Park and Rec suggests all coaches participate. County Council Wants Input on Plastic Bag Reduction Bill

Hawaii County Council is considering an ordinance to reduce the use of plastic bags offered by merchants around the island at checkout.  They will have hearings islandwide starting Tuesday. Councilman Pete Hoffman has introduced the bill.  Hoffman says the bill  intends to proactively address the environmental harm resulting from the proliferation of plastic bags.  In the past, directors of the County’s Department of Environmental Management have said plastic bags are a huge problem in the landfill as they blow all over and the County then spends time and money sending people to corral them. Pahoa Geothermal Forum Coming Saturday

Innovations Development Group is hosting a forum Saturday, April 8  in Pahoa to talk about getting more geothermal on Hawaii Island.  The forum will include presentations by five Native Hawaiians offering their views on how geothermal energy can be offered and still have protection of culture and resources.  Currently, Hawaii Island’s Puna Geothermal Venture is the only organization tapping into the volcano’s power to produce energy.   Innovations Development Group also wants to offer geothermal power.
