This Thursday, June 14, PBS Hawaii will carry the only debate to be televised statewide to which Congresswoman Mazie Hirono has agreed in advance of the August 11 primary.  She will face her major opponent for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Senate Daniel Akaka. PBS Hawaii President and CEO Leslie Wilcox has received the 2012 Businesswoman of the Year-Nonprofit from Pacific Business News.  The award was presented Thursday evening, April 12, at a dinner at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel with more than 450 people. The event honored 15 Hawaii businesswomen in the for-profit category, with Royal Hawaiian General Manager Kelly Hoen taking top honors as the 2012 Businesswoman of the Year – For Profit.  Ten women from the nonprofit world were honored. PBS Hawaii will rebroadcast the Hawaii State Spelling Bee.  The original competition was last Saturday, March 24, and took place at the PBS Hawaii studios on Oahu.  PBS Hawaii aired it live.    The rebroadcast of the 2012 aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee will be Saturday, March 31 at 1 p.m. Fourteen middle school spellers from around the state took part in the event.  They were the winners of competitions among 80 schools statewide. Two Hawaii Island students will take part in the State Spelling Bee this Saturday, March 24.  The competition will air statewide on PBS Hawaii (Channel 10 on most Hawaii Island televisions) at 7 p.m. Roland Afaga, Jr., is a 6th grader Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School.  Taggart Nakamoto is in 6th grade at Konawaena Middle School.  Some may recall that Taggart’s older brother, Talmadge Nakamoto, was a previous participant as Hawaii Island’s champion and won the State Bee,  going on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D. PBS Hawaii Starting Repair Work on Fire-Damaged Studio

PBS Hawaii, Hawaii’s only public television station, announced their program production will be affected for several weeks because of a fire that hit their studio last Friday, November 18.  A light exploded and set fire to a gel and the fire spread.  Although firefighters put the fire out, it rekindled later in the afternoon.   PBS Hawaii has resumed regular programming, but their studio will be inoperable for about a month for repair and restoration.  Specialty contractors must remove all soot from the electronics and thoroughly clean all the Air Conditioning ducts.   The studio…

Konawaena High to Host Statewide Hiki No Premiere on PBS Hawaii

Hawaii Island’s Konawaena High School will host the premiere episode of the second season of the PBS Hawaii’s Hiki No, the nation’s first statewide student news program.  Waiakea High School and Kea’au High School students will also have reports.  The season will include 26 episodes which will air in prime time, starting this Thursday, October 13, at 7:30. Kona Mauka Rotary invites the public to their weekly luncheon on Tuesday, August 2.  The featured speaker will be PBS Hawaii CEO Leslie Wilcox.   PBS Hawaii is the statewide public television network.
