A Chorus Line:  A Singular Sensation

This review was written by local resident Tina Owens: Aloha Performing Arts Company’s   opening night of the Broadway musical “A Chorus Line” proved to be a singular sensation.  The cast of local talent really stretched themselves and their abilities to learn the extremely complicated script, songs and, of course, the dancing.  The entire first half of the show is one seamless flow of comedy, pathos and action, with each member of the rather large ensemble cast contributing to the intricate interweaving of stories. Ukulele Fest Saturday Night in Waimea

More than 150 students from Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Kealakehe Intermediate School, and Waikoloa School will perform in the Nineteenth Annual Ukulele Festival at Hawaii Preparatory Academy at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 10.  The festival, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Gates Performing Arts Center, located at HPA’s Upper Campus.   The students are directed by Georgia Polakova, Dagan Bernstein, and Lynn Kakugawa (HPA); Gloria Juan Tapa’atoutai (Kealakehe), and Lani Opunui (Waikoloa).   This year’s festival will feature music and dance from the wonderful world of Disney, going back…

Cataluna to Offer Workshop, Reading at UH Hilo Performing Arts

Journalist and playwright Lee Cataluna will offer a free playwrighting  workshop on Tuesday, October 4 at UH Hilo’s Performing Arts Center’s Green Room from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. On Tuesday, October 4 at 7 p.m., Cataluna will read from her first novel, “Three Years on Dorren’s Sofa,” also at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center. Fourth and fifth graders at Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) will present “Munchkin Mediation:  Conflict Resolution in Oz” at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 7.  The musical performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Gates Performing Arts Center on the school¹s Upper Campus. “Munchkin Mediation: Conflict Resolution in Oz” is presented in conjunction with the students¹ conflict resolution unit.  The play is written by John Heath and Ron Fink of Bad Wolf Press and adapted by HPA music teacher Georgia Polakova and guidance counselor Mariah Dodd. “Hiroshima in the Morning” Nominated for Peace Prize

“Hiroshima in the Morning” by Rahna Reiko Rizzuto has been nominated for the 2011 Dayton Literary Peace Prize, in the nonfiction category.   There are 40 books nominated in the nonfiction category, in addition to 27 books in the fiction category. Rizzuto was born and raised in Waimea on the Big Island, the daughter of well known West Hawaii fishing writing Jim Rizzuto and his late wife, Shirley.   She is a faculty member in the Master of Fine Arts Creative Writing Program at Goddard College and now lives in Brooklyn.     Her acclaimed first novel, “Why She…

Ground Broken for New UH Hilo Center

A blessing and groundbreaking for the new Student Services Center at University of Hawaii at Hilo was held Saturday.  The building will be built just in front of the Performing Arts Center. Chancellor Donald Straney said that high quality services for students will help them get the most out of their university experience.  With student services centralized in a building designed for the function, it will be easier for students to have access to the UH Hilo staff. Marie McDonald Receives Preis Award

Waimea resident Marie McDonald was honored Sunday by the Hawaii Arts Alliance, which presented her with the prestigious Alfred Preis Award.  McDonald was honored for her work in making lei and kapa.   Hawaii Arts Alliance is affiliated with the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington, D. C.    Hawaii Arts Alliance CEO Marilyn Cristofori spoke at the award luncheon at Kanu ‘O Ka ‘Aina New Century Public Charter School in Waimea and said Preis was the first Director of the State Foundation of Arts and Culture, and designed the Arizona Memorial.  This is…
