State House, Senate Candidate Forums Coming in Kona

The Hawaii County League of Women Voters will sponsor two candidate forums: one on Tuesday, June 19 and the other on Tuesday, June 26 at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building.   The Tuesday, June 19 forum will feature candidates for State Representative Districts 5 and 6, which are in Kona.  For State House District 5, which goes from Ka’u through South Kona, the candidates include Dave Bateman, running as a Republican in the Primary, and the incumbent, Denny Coffman, a Democrat, and his Democratic Challenger, Leiolani Oyama.   Assuming Bateman wins his race, he will face…

The County Department of Public Works says it is continuing roadwork throughout West Hawaii through mid-June.   From June 4 through 14, Isemoto Contracting Company Ltd will resurface Mamalahoa Highway in Holualoa, still working on repairing damage caused by the 2006 earthquake between Mile Markers 8.9 and 4.4.  Roadwork is between the hours of 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. weekdays.  Completion is scheduled for June 14.  Intermittent one-lane closures will begin June 4 and could take up to three days at mile marker 8.9, located near Palani Junction.  The remaining days up to June 14…

A flash flood watch means that weather conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. St. James Church in Waimea Gets New Priest

St. James’ Episcopal Church in Waimea has a new minister.  Father David Stout has become the Priest-in-Charge as of October 1. Father Stout was originally from rural Indiana and has served the past seven years as rector of Trinity Church in Asbury Park, New Jersey.  Prior to that he served as the Associate Rector for Member Incorporation at St. Bartholomew’s Church in midtown New York City.  He was ordained at St. Paul’s Cathederal in Beaufort, North Caroline, where he served three years. Vision Van Offering Free Eye Exams on Hawaii Island

The Retina Institute of Hawaii is joining with the Hawaii Island Lions Clubs to help Hawaii Island residents get their vision screened.   Young Brothers has, at no charge, shipped the Project Vision Van from Oahu to Hawaii Island.  It’s a 35 foot mobile opthalmologist office.  The van offers screenings to detect cataracts, glaucoma, retina disease, even diabetes. The van will be here on Hawaii Island offering screenings from August 26 through September 18, with Lions Clubs members specially trained to assist in the process.
