The Ironman Triathlon World Championship will be underway Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m., following a traditional Hawaiian blessing,  when Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi fires the starting cannon.  At 6:30 and 6:35, the professional men and then the women will start their swim in Kailua Bay.   At 7 a.m. Mayor Kenoi will again fire the cannon to get the 1850 age groupers, the amateurs off on their quest for personal achievement.  This year, competitors hail from 64 countries. Akoni Pule Highway Reopened After 2 Hour Closure

Hawaii County Police advised at noon that a motorcycle crash closed Akoni Pule Highway, Highway 270.  The highway reopened shortly after 2 p.m. The accident was between the 27 and 28 Mile Markers on Akoni Pule Highway, north of Kawaihae.  Akoni Pule Highway goes between Kawaihae and Hawi. An alternate route for getting between Hawi and Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway is to use Kohala Mountain Road, which goes directly from Hawi over the mountain to Waimea, then go down towards the ocean towards Kawaihae. Fire Department Remains on Scene at Hualalai Road Brush Fire

Hawaii County Fire Department personnel spent Friday  night at the scene of an approximate 8 to 10-acre brush fire that broke out Friday around 11:45 a.m. just makai of Hualalai Road, near Hualalai Elderly Housing, between Kuakini Highway and Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.  They stayed at the scene until the fire was completely out.  By noon Saturday, a bulldozer was clearing part of the land and creating new fire breaks. Smoke from the fire was visible throughout Kailua-Kona early Friday afternoon.  Police Chief Harry Kubojiri said the smoke was the reason the County began evacuating some…

Public Can Turn in Old Drugs Saturday

This Saturday,  state agencies will collect and dispose of expired or unused prescription medications at two locations on Hawaii Island and around the state, as well. Since September 2010, Hawaii, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands have collected nearly 6,700 pounds of expired and unused prescription medications, according to office of the state Department of the Attorney General.  Nationwide, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) says public participation is high.  They’ve held four such events in the past two years. Hawaii Police have issued an alert that HELCO has removed the power pole from Palani Road and it is now open to traffic, as of 5:49 a.m. Thursday. Original story, 5:15 a.m.: A power pole is down in front of Kona Christian Academy at 74-4907 Palani Road, and Palani Road is closed between Route 180 (Mamalahoa Highway, where the old Hawaiian Gardens was) and Hao Kuni Street until the situation is resolved. From Hawaii Police Department: A 19-year-old Waikoloa man died Tuesday (August 7) from injuries he sustained in a two-vehicle crash on Queen Ka?ahumanu Highway 200 feet south of Kaiminani Drive on July 30 has been identified as Wyland K.B. Damaso of Waikoloa. Responding to a 10:43 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that Damaso was operating a 2012 Ford four-door sedan and traveling north on the Queen Ka?ahumanu Highway when he crossed the centerline and collided with a 2001 Isuzu van being operated by a 54-year-old Kailua-Kona man. Friday Night Queen K Crash Leaves One Woman Dead

A two car crash closed Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway from around midnight Friday until around 4 a.m. Saturday, and left one young woman dead.  The accident occurred near the 91 mile marker, which is close to Kekaha Kai State Park. The woman was identified as Christine C.R. Laeda, of a Hilo address. Police ID Man Killed Thursday in Highway Crash

From Hawaii Police Department: A 38-year-old Kamuela man died Thursday (July 12) from injuries he sustained in a three-vehicle crash on Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway at the 82-mile marker in North Kona. The driver who was killed was identified as Christopher M. Landers of a Kamuela address. Responding to a 3:53 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that a 49-year-old Kailua-Kona man was operating a 2000 Ford F350 pickup truck and traveling south on Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway when his left tire blew out causing him to lose control and sideswipe a 2011 Nissan Altima traveling north.…

Two Killed in Traffic Accidents on Hawaii Island Thursday

Hawaii Police said Thursday was not a good day.  A bicyclist was hit and killed on Akoni Pule Highway Thursday, and later in the afternoon a multi-car accident left one man dead and the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway closed for several hours. A 52-year-old male  bicyclist from Kailua-Kona was traveling east on Akoni Pule Highway around Mile Marker 19, between Old Coast Guard Rd and Kokoiki Rd., just after 1 p.m. when it appeared he was struck and killed by a 15-year-old female driver accompanied by a 48-year-old female passenger in a 2003 Nissan pickup truck.…
