From Hawaii Police Department: An autopsy has determined that 50-year-old Paul S. Tsang of San Francisco died from cardiac arrest not from drowning. Tsang was snorkeling in waters in South Kohala on June 13, when he was found unresponsive. He was taken to North Hawai?i Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Castle & Cooke has filed a transfer application with the Public Utilities Commission to sell Lana’i.   Castle & Cooke owns approximately ninety-seven percent of the island of Lana‘i.  The reason for the filing with the PUC is because as part of the transfer, the water utilities, which are under PUC regulation, are included.   The buyer is Lawrence Ellison, co-founder and chief executive officer of Oracle Corporation.   Ellison was rumored to be interested, and has spent time on the island.   Ellison owns several spectacular houses, including a traditional Japanese-style estate on several acres in…

From Hawaii Police Department: Big Island police are investigating the death of a 50-year-old San Francisco man who died Wednesday (June 13) along the Kohala Coast. Paul S. Tsang was snorkeling in waters off Mauna Lani Beach Club at about 12:35 p.m. when an unidentified person on shore noticed he was floating. An Ogden, Utah, man using a paddle board went to check on Tsang and found him unresponsive. The University of Hawai`i at Hilo College of Pharmacy has earned national ranking as one of the top five new schools of pharmacy in the U.S. News & World Report, according to rankings released March 13, 2012.   In the first year of eligibility since admitting its inaugural class in 2007, CoP ranked 74 out of 135 schools of pharmacy in the United States. Hawi Man in Jail in Thailand–Reportedly a California Felon

A Hawi man, known throughout the community, owner of a restaurant and hotel, publisher of a local newsletter, has been arrested in Thailand.  And it turns out, he’s been on the run from the law for quite a while. News stories from Thailand’s Chiangri Times say Jim Sargent, 62, was arrested in March.  He was retained in northern Chiang Mai after police found he entered Thailand last October on a tourist visa, then changed it to a retirement visa.  His visa was revoked.  Thai Police Lieutenant Colonel Prasart Khemaprasit is quoted as saying he will…

The prestigious Philadelphia Flower Show’s theme this year is Hawaii, Islands of Aloha.  Congresswoman Mazie Hirono made an appearance on opening day, Saturday, March 4, and visited with vendors from the state–including some from Hawaii Island. The top three World Golf Amateurs highlight this year’s field at the 22nd Annual Amer Ari at the Waikoloa Beach Resort, through Friday,  February 3, on the Waikoloa Kings’ Course. Big Island Carbon Gets EPA OK

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) District 9 in San Francisco recently reviewed and approved Big Island Carbon’s Clean Air Permit  application prepared by Hawaii’s State Department of Health. The permit has now been issued.   The Big Island Carbon plant has been operating on a non-covered source permit while working through the State and Federal processes for the Covered Source Clean Air Permit which will allow the company’s Power Plant to be installed. “The EPA’s issuance of our Clean Air Permit means two important things,” explained Big Island Carbon CEO Rick Vidgen. “First, it means we…

Award winning slack key artist Keoki Kahumoku was in Kealakehe over the weekend conducting a music workshop–a blue grass workshop.   Kahumoku, son of George Kahumoku Jr. and nephew of Moses Kahumoku, is best known for his work in perpetuating Hawaiian music.   Kahumoku says blue grass has origins not so different from kiho’alu, or slack key.  Both are early forms of music–slack key being one of the earliest forms of Hawaiian music, and blue grass being old style fiddle, mandolin and stand up bass music with Irish, Scottish, and Welch influences, among others.   Both forms of…
