March 2, 2012
By

The State Reapportionment Commission met Friday, and took no vote on finalizing the lines for the districts for State Senate and State House.  The subcommittee working on the district lines met for four hours, but could not come to agreement.   Their current maps, unveiled a week ago, met with opposition from some Democrats in the State House of Representatives, who accused the Commission of drawing district lines to favor those who support House Chair Calvin Say, but pitting incumbents on Oahu who oppose Say’s chairmanship against each other.  The Commission members deny the charge. State Senator Josh Green (D-Kona) has  introduced the Coffee Origin Disclosure Bill.  The Kona Coffee Farmers Association says the bill is designed to provide a  step forward toward truth-in-labeling.  The bill would require disclosure of the origin of all the coffee in the bag.   For labels on packages containing, for example, 10% Kona coffee the measure would require disclosure of the origin of the 90% not grown in Kona. As an illustration, labels would be required to include disclosures such as “Contains: 90% Panamanian Coffee, 10% Kona Coffee.” Under current law such packages are…

Senator Green Says TAT Safe Next Year (video)

Senator Josh Green, speaking in Kona Thursday night, said the approximately $18 million in Transient Accommodations Tax which Hawaii County has included in its budget, is safe.  In last year’s legislative session, the State Legislature considered keeping those funds in the State coffers—which would have resulted in Hawaii County having to increase taxes and fees or significantly cut its $367 million budget if it lost $18 million. The Transient Accommodation Tax (TAT) is collected on all stays in hotels, condominiums, and bed and breakfasts.  Last year, Mayor Billy Kenoi explained the fund is to help…
