The State Department of Land and Natural Resources credited quick assistance from the Consulate General  of Japan in Honolulu and the Japanese government in confirming that a large blue plastic  storage bin found floating in the ocean off Waimanalo, O’ahu, on September  18, 2012, belongs to Y.K. Suisan, Co., Ltd., whose  offices in Miyagi prefecture, Tohoku Sendai region, were affected by the  March 2011 Japan tsunami.   It is the first confirmed piece of Japan tsunami marine debris to arrive in Hawa’i.   “The Department of Land and Natural Resources, NOAA and all other agencies  involved…

Two Hilo Schools Get Funding for Roof, Road

The State Department of Education has  allocated funding for improvements at two Hawaii Island schools, Ha’aheo Elementary in North Hilo and Kalaniana’ole Elementary and Intermediate Schools, and Governor Neil Abercrombie has released the funds–$467,000.   The projects include road upgrades at Haaheo Elementary and a new roof for one of Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate’s buildings.   State Senator Malama Solomon (D-Waimea, Hamakua, Hilo) said she was pleased the Governor had released funding and commented on how important it is to invest in school infrastructure.   The construction start date has not yet been announced.

The Hawai’i State Department of Health (DOH) is notifying consumers that Red Vines Black Licorice, Snaps and mixed bags containing black licorice may contain elevated levels of lead. The American Licorice Company has announced a voluntary recall of the affected products.   Exposure to high levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead could potentially cause health problems to consumers, particularly infants, young children and pregnant women. Consumers who have purchased the affected products are urged to return it to the place of purchase.   No illnesses related to the product have been reported to…

Workshops on Better Outcomes for Keiki Coming to Kohala, Hilo

A series of workshops, to be held statewide in late August, will address positive long term outcomes for Hawaii’s children, building strong families and eliminating abuse.  The target audience would include the police, judges, parents, and any community members who want a greater understanding of the issues around child abuse and solutions.  Hawaii Island has had some toddler and infant deaths or abuse cases that shouldn’t have gotten to the point they did, and the workshop is one step in educating people as to options for help.   The workshops, titled “Our Keiki, Our Kuleana,”…

The Hawai’i State Department of Health (DOH) has announced a half-cent increase of the deposit beverage container fee charged to manufacturers, distributors and importers of beverages in Hawai’i.  After consideration of the fiscal year 2012 redemption rate of 77 percent and evaluation of the current deposit beverage special fund balance, the director of health has determined that the container fee will increase from 1 cent to 1 1/2 cents per container beginning September 1, 2012.  Distributors registered with the state were sent a notification letter earlier this week.   “The half-cent fee increase was written…

Department of Ed Cuts Bus Service for 96 Waikoloa Students

Around 96 Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School students will lose their bus service for this coming school year, the State Department of Education announced on Saturday.  Statewide, around 2,400 students will no longer have access to school bus service.  East Hawaii will have no cuts in bus service. The neighborhoods affected include Waikoloa Gardens, Paniolo Greens, Makana Kai, Waikoloa Hills, Mahina, Ua-Noe, Auhili Lp., Kauhiwai, which currently have 45 students who use the school bus.  The Department says 51 students from LuaKula, Laie, AkaUla, Hulu, KilaKila will also lose service. Lalamilo Water Work Closes Kohala Road Through Friday

One lane will be closed along the South Kohala Distribution Road, through this Friday, June 29,  between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. due to construction of the Lalamilo Water System. During non-work hours, both lanes will be open to traffic, as conditions permit. State Sets Thursday Meet About Saddle Road Extension to Waikoloa Resort

Now that work on the west side of Saddle Road is well underway, the State is moving to extend Saddle Road all the way down to Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.  The current work on Saddle Road is completely realigning the road so it goes from roughly the Girl Scout Camp on Saddle Road down to Mile Marker 13 on Mamalahoa Highway, south of Waikoloa Road.  The existing Saddle Road through Waiki’i Ranch will still exist.  The State  will have a public information meeting Thursday evening at Waikoloa School  to review the plans and get community input.…

Local Produce Available to Low Income Seniors

Hawaii Island Food Basket, our island’s food bank, will be providing low income seniors with locally-grown fruits and vegetables under a grant from the State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. The Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and Coordinated Elderly Services, part of Hawaii County, will handle the distribution at ten sites in East Hawaii and 9 in West Hawaii.   The distribution program will run from June 18 until September 30, 2012. Low income seniors are eligible to receive the produce.  Low income seniors are those 60 years old and having household incomes of 185% of…
