From Hawaii County Police: Big Island police have identified a man wanted for questioning in connection with a stabbing last week in Kailua-Kona. Police are looking for 29-year-old Tommy Eugan Howard. He is described as African-American with black hair and brown eyes. He may wear contact lenses that alter his eye color. He has a tattoo of a chain of musical notes that runs from his left shoulder down along his left arm. He sometimes goes by the names Casino, Tommy Washington and Cesar Waltz. Department of Health, Koyo Water Settle for $2 Million

The Hawai’i State Department of Health (DOH) has agreed to settle its enforcement action against Koyo USA Corporation (Koyo), which is in business  in space at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii.   Koyo takes deep sea water, proesses it, and bottles it.    The action was  filed in September 2011.   Koyo has agreed to pay the department a total of $2 million in two installments.  The first $1 million payment was received by DOH on May 2, 2012.  The second and final payment is due to the department no later than August 31,…

State Health Says:  No Shellfish from Korea!

From Hawaii State Department of Health: The Hawai’i State Department of Health (DOH) is advising consumers not to eat fresh or frozen shellfish (clams, oysters or mussels) that come from Korea.   The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that all fresh and frozen shellfish, and many products made from these shellfish, imported from Korea to the United States may be contaminated and unsafe for human consumption.   Effective immediately, FDA has removed all certified dealers in the Korean Shellfish Sanitation Program from its Interstate Certified Shellfish Shippers List.  This action stops the shipment…

The State Department of Education says on the 2011 student assessment tests, Hawaii was the only state to make significant gains in the National Assessment of Educational Progress tests for mathematics for grades 4 and 8, reading for grades 4 and 8, and science for grade 8.   Between January and March 2011, NAEP administered assessments in all 50  states and two jurisdictions (District of Columbia and Department of  Defense schools) to a nationally representative sample of 422,000 fourth-  and 465,000 eighth-grade students.  NAEP is a congressionally mandated project of the U.S. Department of  Education’s…

State DOT Names New Spokesperson

The Hawaii State Department of Transportation has named Caroline Sluyter as its new spokesperson in the wake of the departure of Dan Meisenzahl, who has moved to the University of Hawaii. Sluyter has been a Media Liaison at Honolulu Police Department since 2008.  Prior to that she was with television stations KITV and KHNL.  She has a degree in Journalism from San Diego State University. Her effective date is Wednesday, May 16.

Hawaii State Department of Transportation plans roadwork for the week ending Friday, April 19, subject to weather.  Where there’s work, there will be slowdowns and some road closures: SOUTH KOHALA Alternating lane closures in both directions are planned this week on Kohala Mountain Road, State Highway 250,  between mile markers 2 and 7, in the vicinity of Waiaka Junction, for pavement resurfacing. The Kohala community nonprofit Maika‘i Kamakani ‘O Kohala, Inc. has purchased more than 27.5 acres of undeveloped shoreline at Kauhola Point, located in Hala‘ula, North Kohala. Hamakua Coast Roadwork End in Sight!

Motorists on the Hamakua Coast should soon find no construction, and no more lengthy delays for the alternating lane road closures.   Road work to install wire netting along the sides of the road in the three gulches is now set to be completed May 3. State Department of Transportation spokesman Dan Meisenzahl says the road safety project started in December, 2010.   It  cost more than $10 million, and completion has been delayed at times because of weather and was extended for additions to the contract.     Workers have installed chain-link netting  that is intended to…

New Rules Prohibit Backyard Burning

The Hawai’i State Department of Health (DOH) Clean Air Branch has amended Hawai‘i Administrative Rules 11-60.1 (related to air pollution control) by adding new restrictions on open burning of trash and green waste. These additions will improve the Agricultural Burning Permit process and expand the issuance of field citations.   Open burning of yard waste and household trash also known as “backyard burning” has been illegal on O‘ahu since June 1, 1973. The State Department of Transportation has announced its plans for roadwork this week, through Friday, March 30.  Monday, March 26 is the Prince Jonah Kuhio Day holiday so no work is planned for Monday.   -Akoni Pule Highway will have alternating lane closures between Mile Markers 8 and 10 near Mahukona State Beach Park, for pavement reconstruction.  Work will start Tuesday, March 27 and go through Friday, March 30.   -At Laupahoehoe, there will be alternating lane closures between Old Mamalahoa Highway and Niupea Homestead Road for slope stabilization work.  Work will start Tuesday, March…

As a result of recent rains, the Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) reminds the public to remove standing water from their property to help reduce mosquito populations.  Preventing increases in mosquitos is even more important now that a disease-carrying mosquito species has been identified on O‘ahu for the first time in more than 60 years. Wang Addresses Need for Brain Injury Rehab Facility
