Manoa Faculty Objects to Fishery Program Move to UH Hilo

The Honolulu Star Advertiser is reporting that University of Hawaii at Manoa professors are raising concerns about the loss of a federally funded fisheries cooperative. When the program moves to UH-Hilo, the system’s flagship campus will be without a fisheries program. The program is a joint project between the U. S. Geological Survey and the University of Hawaii.  The USGS funds faculty positions and provides the use of equipment.   There’s also support from the State Department of Land and Natural Resources.  The current assistant team leader is Alan Friedlander.  The Star Advertiser says he would…

Taste of Kalo Coming to North Kohala March 10

The community is invited to the Taste of Kalo 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 10 at the Kohala Intergenerational Center in Kamehameha Park behind the Hisaoka Gym in North Kohala. Deadline Friday for West Side Farmers Signup for Skills Conference

University of Hawaii’s Community Colleges, the State, and the Hawaii Farm Bureau are lead sponsors of a forum on Tuesday, March 6, at Kona’s King Kamehameha Beach Hotel to  address workforce and job skill issues that are impeding West Hawaii’s agriculture industry.   Farmers are invited to participate at no cost, but the deadline to sign up is Friday morning. Traffic Changes on Island Start Tonight

There are two major traffic changes coming this weekend. Starting tonight, Friday, at 6 p.m., Palani Road mauka of Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway will be closed in both directions.  Palani Road has been closed mauka-bound only for construction in connection with modifications caused by the Ane Keohokalole Highway work, and will remain closed until around March 23.  But for 24 hours, from tonight at 6 p.m. until Saturday at 6 p.m., both lanes will be closed.  The State Department of Transportation says the contractor, Nan, Inc., will use a special paving machine to complete much of…

State DOT Relocating Hilo Harbor Security Area

From Hawaii State Department of Transportation: The State Department of Transportation (DOT) will be relocating the Hilo Harbor security screening area for cruise ship passengers from inside the Pier 1 Shed to the outside walkway of the pier. Work on the $53,482 project is set to begin February 22 and is scheduled to be completed by March 13, 2012. Tents and utilities will be installed creating a weather-protected area outside the boarding area for the passengers and security staff. Volunteers Count Whales Saturday

More than 950 volunteers gathered data from the shores of O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, and Hawai‘i Island for Saturday’s annual Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Ocean Count. Participants tallied humpback whale sightings and documented the animals’ surface behavior during the survey. The sanctuary, which is jointly managed by NOAA and the State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), protects humpback whales and their habitat in Hawaiian waters where they migrate each winter to mate, calve, and nurse their young.   Up to 12,000 humpback whales are found in Hawaiian waters every year. Kaiser Gives Grant to Create Healthier Hawaii Schools

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has awarded the Hawaii State Department of Education a $40,300 grant to provide technical assistance and support to schools applying for HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) certification. Janet Liang, president of Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, will present a check to Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, January 30, on the stairs fronting the Queen Liliuokalani Building. HUSSC is a voluntary national certification initiative established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food & Nutrition Services (FNS) in 2004 for schools participating in the National School Lunch Program. Hawaii State Department of Agriculture says an illegal ferret was captured early Sunday morning, January 22, 2012, in the parking lot of Coqui’s Hideaway Restaurant & Sports Bar in Hilo.   Around 1:00 a.m., a resident saw the ferret emerge from a parked moped and captured the animal. The animal was turned in to Hawai`i Island Humane Society later that day and turned over to inspectors at the Hilo office of the Hawai`i Department of Agriculture (HDOA) on Monday. The ferret was flown to Honolulu yesterday and is being safeguarded at HDOA’s Plant Quarantine Branch where…

It’s now legal to make U-Turns at northbound Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway and Makala Boulevard, allowing drivers to go back southbound either to get to Kona’s Old Industrial Area or get back to Kailua Village.  For drivers in Kona, this will eliminate confusion and save gas and time.   When Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway was expanded from two lanes to four and a large median put in between Palani Road and Makala, the makai turn lane down Kaiwi Street into Kona’s Old Industrial from northbound Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway was no longer accessible (it’s still there for southbound…

Waimea resident Margaret Wille is running for County Council District 9, to serve the Waimea, Waikoloa, and North Hawaii communities.  Wille is an attorney practicing land use law in Waimea.  She previously taught part-time at Parker School, served as a consultant for the State Department of Agriculture, and administered a statewide volunteer program for the American Bar Association to assist institutionalized adult and youth offenders reentering society.   Wille has a law degree, a Master’s in Education, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology.
