Hapuna, Kekaha Kai Closing Early Today

Release from Department of Land and Natural Resources: The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will close Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and Kekaha Kai State Park at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4. Hapuna Beach SRA, including the Waialea Bay section, and Kekaha Kai State Park, including the Manini‘owali (Kua Bay) and Mahaiula sections, will both close early. “We are closing the park early to discourage use of fireworks, which is prohibited in state parks, and to protect the public and natural resources of the area,” said DLNR Chairperson, William J. Kamehameha Day Events Continue All Week

King Kamehameha Day festivities are continuing around Hawaii Island.  Yesterday, Saturday, hundreds of people crowded onto Moku Ola, Coconut Island, for Hilo’s Kamehameha Day Celebration.  There was music, food, traditional Hawaiian competitions and crafters galore.   This afternoon, Sunday, June 10, the public is invited to the lei draping of the Hilo King Kamehameha Statue.  The event will be at 5 p.m.  The Hilo King Kamehameha Statue, one of four in the state, is in Wailoa State Park.   Monday, June 11, is actually King Kamehameha Day, and that’s the day for the celebration in…

The Kuki’o Challenge is coming up Sunday, June 3.  The race consists of a .5 mile swim, 3 mile run, and 4 mile paddle, or 2 mile paddleboard/stand-up paddleboard inside the exclusive Kuki’o Resort. Wailoa Center Reopens

Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center is open again.  It was closed starting in December for renovations, including installing new electrical wiring, painting the building inside and out, fixing the interior fountain and refinishing the floors in the office, Fountain Gallery and outside lanai. It was supposed to be open in time for the annual Wood Turners Exhibit, which was scheduled to begin March 2, but had to be cancelled. Vendor Now Charging Visitors at Akaka Falls State Park

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks has initiated a new five year contract for the collection of entry fees at Akaka Falls State Park, with Makai Parking Inc. now on site as the new vendor to collect the fees starting today. The current fees will remain the same and are only collected from commercial tour operators and out of state visitors. DLNR Suspending Visitor Fees for Akaka Falls–Temporarily

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks is initiating a new five year contract for the collection of entry fees at Akaka Falls State Park.  Due to delays in contract execution, the Division of State Parks will temporarily suspend the collection of entry fees for a short period of time.   It is anticipated that the new vendor will be established on site to collect the fees, no later than early March. Wailoa Center Repairs Taking Longer Than Planned

Wailoa Center’s Codie King has announced it is cancelling its annual  Wood Turners Exhibit due to ongoing renovation work.  The exhibition had been scheduled to run from March 2 through March 30.   The Wood Turners are now seeking another venue for their annual show.   Wailoa Center has been closed since December  for renovations, including installing new electrical wiring, painting the building inside and out, fixing the interior fountain and refinishing the floors in the office, Fountain Gallery and outside lanai.   The Wailoa Center Management team says they are having difficulty with delivery of…

Brush Fire Burns 18 Acres Near Akoni Pule Wednesday

Hawaii Fire Department was called to a fire makai of Akoni Pule just south of Lapakahi State Park Wednesday morning around 6 a.m.  The fire started small but spread to around 18 acres before fire crews extinguished it. Both Akoni Pule Road and Kawaihae Road were closed from time to time with slow traffic throughout Wednesday morning.

Tree Knocks Out Power Around Highway 11 in Manuka

Hawaiian Electric Light Company issued a press release saying a tree fell on their power lines at 8:57 a.m. Wednesday morning near Manuka State Park on Highway 11.  The result was a power outage affecting around 1700 customers.  Other customers around the island also may have experienced brief interruptions. The highway was completely closed from 9 a.m. until around noon, and then one lane was reopened.  Both lanes were open again by early evening. Power was restored at 10:16 a.m., but work  continued all day to restore the downed lines.

From Department of Land and Natural Resources: The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has completed an extensive coastal area cleanup at Kiholo State Park Reserve, thanks to strong support from community volunteers, and is now implementing an interim camping management plan to allow for permitted camping in designated areas that are appropriately situated to avoid impacts to cultural sites. “DLNR recognizes Hawai‘i’s longtime need for recreational shoreline camping, and this interim camping action will eliminate impacts associated with driving on the shoreline,” said William J.
