The County of Hawai’i held a blessing Tuesday morning, October 16, to commence $4.15 million worth of improvements to the State-owned slaughterhouse in Pa’auilo. La’aloa Street on Planning Commission Agenda for Thursday

On Thursday, October 18, 2012 the County of Hawai`i Leeward Planning Commission will consider a Special Management Area (SMA) permit application by the County Department of Public Works to the extension of La`aloa Avenue as a two-lane, 60-foot wide collector roadway for approximately 1,900 feet to connect with Kuakini Highway.   The County had considered several alternative designs.   The selected alternative calls for sidewalks and bike lanes.    Peoples Advocacy Trails Hawaii (PATH) has issued a statement saying that geographical challenges will preclude some bicyclists and pedestrians from the effective use of this extension if not…

The new Hawaii County (temporary) Elections Administrator, Lehua Iopa, said Wednesday that the first round of absentee ballots should be in the mail Monday, October 15, or shortly thereafter.     The last day to request an absentee ballot, either for this election only or to receive permanent absentee ballots, is October 30. Absentee ballots may be returned by mail or taken to  the Hawaii County Elections offices in Kona at West Hawaii Civic Center and in Hilo at 25 Aupuni Center.  Iopa said they may also be returned to any of the three walk-in absentee polling…

Fire Department Remains on Scene at Hualalai Road Brush Fire

Hawaii County Fire Department personnel spent Friday  night at the scene of an approximate 8 to 10-acre brush fire that broke out Friday around 11:45 a.m. just makai of Hualalai Road, near Hualalai Elderly Housing, between Kuakini Highway and Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.  They stayed at the scene until the fire was completely out.  By noon Saturday, a bulldozer was clearing part of the land and creating new fire breaks. Smoke from the fire was visible throughout Kailua-Kona early Friday afternoon.  Police Chief Harry Kubojiri said the smoke was the reason the County began evacuating some…

There will be a special meeting of the Hawaii County Council on Tuesday to discuss the recently filed lawsuits by two terminated elections employees.  It begins at 9 a.m. at the Hilo County Council Chambers.  However, it will be in executive session, which means the public and the media may not attend. County Finance Gets Kudos for Financial Reports

The County of Hawai‘i has been recognized for excellence in financial reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, also known as the CAFR.   Stephen J. Gauthier, spokesman for the association which serves about 17,500 government financial professionals, said the CAFR prepared by the county’s Finance Department has earned a certificate of achievement  for clearly communicating the County’s financial story.
