Accidents Lead Cops to Focus on Motorcyclists

From Hawaii Police Department: In light of several recent motorcycle fatalities, Traffic Enforcement Unit officers on the Big Island will focus enforcement efforts on unsafe operation of motorcycles, including equipment violations. According to Sergeant Christopher Gali, who heads the Traffic Enforcement Unit, reckless driving was a factor in three of the four motorcycle fatalities this year. “The purpose of our enforcement effort is to prevent additional tragedies,” Gali said. From Hawaii Police Department: A 19-year-old Kamuela man and an 18-year-old Honoka’a man died Sunday (May 6) from injuries they received in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road in South Kohala. The men were identified as Kauaheaheokaua Lactaoen, 19 of a Kamuela address and Rocky P. Pactol, 18, of a Honoka’a address. From Hawaii Police Department: Big Island police are reminding the public to follow traffic laws at intersections. The Police Department has received complaints that motorists are traveling through intersections or making left and right turns after a traffic signal turns red. One of the complaints is that motorists approaching intersections fail to stop when the light turns yellow and frequently even after it turns red. Shortly before 7:29 a.m., a 40-year-old Volcano woman was traveling south on Kino?ole Street south of Ohea Street in a 2005 Toyota Tacoma when she struck a 20-year-old Hilo man riding a bicycle in the same direction.
