Senator Inouye Seeks to Get Akaka Bill In as Budget Rider

United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye has come up with a new method to get the Akaka Bill passed.  He’s inserted a policy rider into the Senate’s draft of a Department of Interior spending bill.  The policy rider would allow the federal government to recognize Native Hawaiians in a way similar to how it recognizes Native Americans, Native Indians. Saddle Road Dedicated and Blessed Monday

United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi, and Hawaii State Department of Transportation Director Glenn Okimoto were among several   federal,  state, and county officials celebrating  an almost-completed segment of Saddle Road and one yet to start Senator Inouye has been responsible for securing federal funding for reconstructing almost all of Saddle Road’s 48 miles.    Work on the eight mile segment between mile markers 11 and 19  near Hilo is now complete except for minor finishing work.   The cost was $32.8 million. Cellana Seeks New Product Opportunities

Cellana is a company that operates out of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii.  They were founded in 2004 to create oil from algae.   Now, Cellana co-founder and board member, former University of Hawaii geophysicist Dr. Barry Raleigh, says the January departure of Cellana’s initial major partner,  Royal Dutch Shell, has given Cellana more flexibility. Akaka Will Not Seek Re-election

Senator Daniel J. Akaka announced Wednesday he will not seek reelection.  His seat is up for re-election in November, 2012.  Senator Akaka has held the  second Hawaii Congressional seat for 22 years.  Prior to that, he served in the United States House of Representatives for 13 years.  He is 86 years old. Senator Daniel K. Inouye Says No to Earmarks

Hawaii’s senior United States Senator ,Daniel K. Inouye,  has announced he will ban “earmarks,” or individual funding requests, for two years.  Inouye chairs the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, which is responsible for doling out money.  Inouye in the past has said he’s proud of being able to fund island projects, especially for military, education,  road, and harbor projects.   President Barack Obama said in his State of the Union address he will veto any bill with earmarks.    The Senate had been considering a $1.3 trillion appropriations bill that included $321 million for Hawaii projects, but abandoned…
