Monday is the last day to write letters of support for Hawaiian Airlines’ application to start a new direct Kona-Japan flight.   Hawaiian is asking businesses and residents to write letters of support to the U. S. Department of Transportation, explaining why the USDOT should grant the route to Hawaiian Airlines.   Hawaiian Airlines has filed an application for a daily, direct flight between Haneda, Japan and Kona.  It would depart from Kona at 5:50 p.m. from October through May and at 5:30 p.m. from November through April, arriving at Haneda at 10:00 p.m. the following…

The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce is seeking assistance from residents and businesses around the island to help make a direct Kona-Japan flight a reality. The public is invited to a screening of a documentary  film about the all Japanese American military unit, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which  served during World War II.    It will be shown in Hilo, Honoka’a, and Kona.   The documentary is about the history of the Hawaii Japanese Nisei, American-born sons of Japanese immigrants, and their role in the 442nd.   The Japanese-American 442nd Regiment Combat Team, including the 100th Infantry Battalion, and the Military Intelligence Service were an all-Nisei US Army regiment,  which served in Europe during World War II. The Democratic Party on Oahu has postponed a debate/forum that was to include the two major candidates for United States Senate, Congresswoman Mazie Hirono and former Congressman Ed Case, originally scheduled for this Thursday, May 24.   Hawaii Pacific University offered to host a debate at the same day and same time as a substitute.  Former Congressman Case accepted the invitation, but Congresswoman Hirono declined. Hilo Artist Dawson to Talk at Lyman Museum

HIlo artist John D. Dawson will give a talk on Monday, March 19 at 7 p.m., at the Lyman Museum in Hilo. Dawson is the artist in residence at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has done extensive artwork for not only Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, but other parks throughout the country, and has created several original stamps.  The latest is his bonsai stamp series, now on sale as “Forever” stamps at all post offices in the country.   In 2010, his Volcano Rainforest stamp  sheets were unveiled at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
