State Sets Thursday Meet About Saddle Road Extension to Waikoloa Resort

Now that work on the west side of Saddle Road is well underway, the State is moving to extend Saddle Road all the way down to Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.  The current work on Saddle Road is completely realigning the road so it goes from roughly the Girl Scout Camp on Saddle Road down to Mile Marker 13 on Mamalahoa Highway, south of Waikoloa Road.  The existing Saddle Road through Waiki’i Ranch will still exist.  The State  will have a public information meeting Thursday evening at Waikoloa School  to review the plans and get community input.…

BYU Hawaii’s Scolari Leading Pac West Golf

BYU-Hawaii’s Jon Scolari sits atop the leader board of the Pacific West Conference Men’s Golf Championship on the Waikoloa Kings’ Course at the Waikoloa Beach Resort.   The final round’s shotgun start is slated for 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.  The public is invited to watch.   Scolari turned in a 5-under-par 139 after the first two rounds in which he was the only player to record back-to-back sub-par rounds opening with a 3-under-par 69 followed by a 2-under-par 70.   Four players are tied for 2nd place at 2-under-par 142. The University of Hawaii at Hilo hosts the 2012 Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Men’s Golf Championship, April 22-24, on the Waikoloa Kings Course at the Waikoloa Beach Resort.   Participating in the tournament are PacWest members Academy of Art University (San Francisco, Calif.), Brigham Young University-Hawaii, California Baptist University (Riverside), Chaminade University, Dixie Sate College of Utah (St. George), Dominican University (San Rafael, Calif.), Grand Canyon University (Phoenix, Ariz.), Hawaii Hilo, Hawaii Pacific University and Notre Dame de Namur University (Belmont, Calif.).   Five players will represent each school in the best-4-of-5, 54-hole format.…

Eddie Aikau Restaurant Seeks Help for Hurt Filmmaker

The Eddie Aikau Restaurant in Kings’ Shops, Waikoloa Beach Resort, will hold a fundraiser for Mike Prickett, the underwater filmmaker who was recently injured in a diving accident, on Wednesday, March 28, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.   The fundraiser coincides with other support activities around the state and nationally, as part of the “Pray for Prickett” campaign.   Prickett, a longtime friend of the Aikau family, was working on a film shoot in Tahiti when the accident occurred.  Prickett dove 220 feet to save the life of another diver, suffered from severe decompression sickness and was paralyzed…

Sam Choy Poke Contest Winners Announced

The winner of the Sam Choy’s Keauhou Poke Contest, held Sunday March 18, 2012 at Sheraton Keauhou,  have been announced.  Chef Jayson Kanekoa of   the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa took home the lion’s share of the prizes. He took first place in three   of four professional categories—traditional, spicy and cooked—and took  third place in the poke with soy sauce category.   The top pro finisher for poke with soy sauce was Kevin Lanning of Island Thyme Gourmet in   Kailua-Kona. The top three World Golf Amateurs highlight this year’s field at the 22nd Annual Amer Ari at the Waikoloa Beach Resort, through Friday,  February 3, on the Waikoloa Kings’ Course. UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay, Texas’ Jordan Spieth and Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers, ranked 1-3, will be leading their respective schools in the 20-team competition.   The tournament field includes eight of the top 14 NCAA Division I teams. Professional dancer Karina Smirnoff, who’s been on the ABC television hit “Dancing with the Stars” for six years, is giving an exercise/dance class on Friday at 9 a.m. at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.   Smirnoff is making a tour of  the islands to promote her new dance-oriented exercise program and DVD, “Shape Up with Karina Smirnoff.” Smirnoff and her partner, Iraq war veteran and actor J.
