The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is sponsoring a 115-mile bike ride taking place today, Saturday, and tomorrow, Sunday, August 5,  on the west side of Hawaii Island.  The event will raise funds for the battle against MS, as each rider has raised or is raising funds to donate as part of their ride. Island Ready to Celebrate America’s Independence

The entire country will celebrate America’s birthday–July 4, 1776–on Wednesday.   The day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which declared America’s independence from Great Britain.   Here on Hawaii Island, there will be celebrations all day. In Volcano, the parade will start Wednesday at 9 a.m., going from the Post Office to Cooper Center.  There will be games, food, entertainment, and activities at Cooper Center afterwards. The two females pictured were caught on video on May 12, 2012 in the Waikoloa Resort area. The World Triathlon Corporation’s board of directors has decided that seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong will be barred from competing in Ironman events while he is under investigation for doping, espn.com is now reporting.   The U. S. Anti-Doping Agency announced last week it intends to file charges of doping against him.  The rules of the Agency say that athletes under investigation for alleged doping offenses cannot participate in WTC-sanctioned triathlons.   If Armstrong is found guilty, he may lose all seven of his Tour de France medals.   World Triathlon Corporation’s decision…

State Sets Thursday Meet About Saddle Road Extension to Waikoloa Resort

Now that work on the west side of Saddle Road is well underway, the State is moving to extend Saddle Road all the way down to Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.  The current work on Saddle Road is completely realigning the road so it goes from roughly the Girl Scout Camp on Saddle Road down to Mile Marker 13 on Mamalahoa Highway, south of Waikoloa Road.  The existing Saddle Road through Waiki’i Ranch will still exist.  The State  will have a public information meeting Thursday evening at Waikoloa School  to review the plans and get community input.…

Charity Walk Nets $1.3 Million Statewide–$194 K Here

The statewide Charity Walk collected $1,371,955 statewide, setting a record for the second year in a row.  The Hawaii Island Charity Walk, held  on Saturday, May 12, at Queen’s Marketplace and Waikoloa Resort, collected $194,266, a record for the island.  The Hawaii Island goal was $175,000.   Other islands had Charity Walks in the month of May.  More than 200 nonprofit organizations statewide will benefit from the funds raised.

Waiakea Warriors Are State Baseball Champs

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser calls it “an historic night” for the Waiakea High School baseball team.  Participants in Saturday morning’s Charity Walk at Waikoloa Resort called it “awesome.”   All of that was true Friday night as the Waiakea High School boys defeated Baldwin High School on Oahu 5 to 2, capturing the Division I title of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships. The team’s record this year, with the Friday night win, is 26-0.   Waiakea High School supporters and students at Saturday morning’s Charity Walk gave much credit to pitcher Quintin Torres-Costa, who struck out…

Charity Walk Coming Saturday to Waikoloa

The annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk is coming Saturday, May 12 at the Waikoloa Resort.  The event is intended not only to be a fun community gathering, but to raise money for Hawaii Island charities.   The event happens statewide, not just on Hawaii Island but also Maui, Oahu, Moloka’i, and Kaua’i.   The event began in 1974, when the Hawai‘i Hotel & Lodging Association sponsored a “Superwalk” to benefit one major charitable organization.  In 1978, the Hawai‘i Hotel & Lodging Association members voted to extend the reach of support offered by the walk’s fund-raising capability. …

Hawaii County Council members were among those commenting this week on the revelation that the County’s Department of Environmental Management has been doing a “pilot project”, hauling trash from East Hawaii to the West Hawaii landfill at Pu’uanahulu in the Waikoloa Resort area, for several months. Hawaii County has opened its latest low income housing project, with Tuesday’s untying of the maile lei opening the door for 40 families to start their new life in positive surroundings.  Mayor Billy Kenoi and several of those involved in the project spoke in praise of the work to get the facility up and going.
