State Sets Thursday Meet About Saddle Road Extension to Waikoloa Resort

Now that work on the west side of Saddle Road is well underway, the State is moving to extend Saddle Road all the way down to Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.  The current work on Saddle Road is completely realigning the road so it goes from roughly the Girl Scout Camp on Saddle Road down to Mile Marker 13 on Mamalahoa Highway, south of Waikoloa Road.  The existing Saddle Road through Waiki’i Ranch will still exist.  The State  will have a public information meeting Thursday evening at Waikoloa School  to review the plans and get community input.…

Convoys from Kawaihae to PTA Through Sunday

Oahu-based military units will convoy from Kawaihae Harbor to Pohakuloa Training Area today through Sunday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.. The convoys will travel via Kawaihae Road, Queen Kaahumanu Highway, Waikoloa Road, Mamalahoa Highway and Saddle Road. The convoys will not have Hawaii Police Department escorts but will have escort vehicles front and rear. Motorists are advised to be alert and drive with care. Big Island police have identified the motorcyclist who died Wednesday (April 4) from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle/motorcycle crash as 31-year-old Brocky A. Rapozo of Honoka?a. Original report from Wednesday, April 4, 2012: A man driving a Kawasaki  motorcycle at a high rate of speed died Wednesday when he rear-ended a vehicle on Mamalahoa Highway, Highway 190, the upper road, near the 13-mile marker at Pu’uanahulu.   The area was a construction zone.     The 31-year-old motorcycle rider smashed into the other vehicle  around 11:25  a.m.  Firefighters said the motorcycle  was on its…

Oahu-based military units will convoy from Pohakuloa Training Area to Kawaihae Harbor on Sunday and Monday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. via Saddle Road, Mamalahoa Highway, Waikoloa Road, Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road. United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi, and Hawaii State Department of Transportation Director Glenn Okimoto were among several   federal,  state, and county officials celebrating  an almost-completed segment of Saddle Road and one yet to start Senator Inouye has been responsible for securing federal funding for reconstructing almost all of Saddle Road’s 48 miles.    Work on the eight mile segment between mile markers 11 and 19  near Hilo is now complete except for minor finishing work.   The cost was $32.8 million. Community to Celebrate Corporal Camero Thursday

Governor Neil Abercrombie has ordered that all national and Hawaii State flags fly at half-staff Thursday from sunset to sunrise in honor of U. S. Marine Lance Corporal Christopher L. Camero.  Corporal Camero was killed in July in Afghanistan from wounds he sustained after stepping on an improved explosive device, a homemade bomb.  Corporal Camero was 19, a 2010 graduate of Honoka’a High. Community members will stand in honor along Corporal Camero’s funeral procession route and along the access road to the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery Thursday.  Several local businesses are supporting the effort.   Hawaiian…

Avoid Kawaihae Road Till Midnight Wednesday

From Hawaii Police Department: Hawaii Police Department advises you to AVOID Kawaihae Road (Rte. 19) in the vicinity of the 63 milemarker due to a traffic accident. Patrol units have one lane open and are directing traffic around the scene. Traffic will be moving slowly in both diections during this period. An alternative route would be Waikoloa Road or the Kohala Mountain Road.    Traffic should be flowing again by midnight.

Flooding, Road Closures, Slowdowns around the Island

Hawaii County Civil Defense says the National Weather Service has placed Hawaii County under a Flash Flood Warning until 7:30 pm this evening. A flash flood warning means that flash flooding is imminent or already occurring. Heavy rains are reported in South Kohala, North Kona, and South Kona. All motorists are asked to drive with caution and be on the alert for debris, runoff and ponding water. Waikoloa Road Resurfacing Starts Monday (February 28)

Hawaii Public Works Department says 1.6 miles of Waikoloa Road will be resurfaced starting the week of Feb 28. Completion is scheduled the third week of March, weather permitting. Motorists please plan for delays due to alternate lane closures beginning at Blue Hawaiian Heliport, Waikoloa. Public Works crews and equipment are working between the hours of 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday, excluding weekends & holidays.
