Voter Education, Registration Programs Set Around Island

Hawai‘i County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi will hold several voter and absentee ballot registration and education programs.  The next is Wednesday evening, June 13, at Waikoloa School from 6 to 7:30.   On Saturday, June 16, the program is at Waikoloa Village Market from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.   There will also be one Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the Pahoa High School Cafeteria, Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at the Honoka‘a High School Cafeteria and Tuesay, July 10, 2012 at the Hilo County Building Council Chambers, Rm. 1401.  All meetings are 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.…

Food Basket Launching 100K Pound Drive

Hawaii Island Food Basket is embarking on its tenth annual Feed A Thon.  Local radio personality Tommy Ching, aka Kahikina will take the lead role in helping collect food and cash for Hawaii Island Food Basket, which is Hawaii Island’s food bank.  They provide food to dozens of nonprofit organizations around the island which help feed those who need it.  According to Food Basket Executive Director Nani Lee, they’re feeding around 1 out of 5 of Hawaii Island’s residents.  They’re distributing around 100,000 pounds of food a month.  And the goal of this year’s drive…

Will Zucker, Sales Director for Mahalo Broadcasting (parent company of LAVA 105.3 fm and KKOA 107.7 fm) will receive a Certificate of Appreciation Wednesday, December 7 at 9 a.m. from Hawaii County Council for his recent successful food drive as part of his Hike For Hunger. Zucker walked 127 miles from Hilo to Kona in November over a seven-day period starting November 5 to raise awareness of the need for island residents to help Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank, with donations of food or cash.   He collected 1,094 pounds of food and $11,394.21 in…

Zucker Ups Food Drive Goal to 100,000 Pounds

Thursday was the fourth day of food collection in Will Zucker’s third annual Hike for Hunger.  Zucker has now walked 70 miles out of 127 total for his awareness-raising walk.  Zucker wants to draw attention to the plight of one out of five Hawaii Island residents, who use the services of The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s Food Bank.  Zucker’s stated goal at the start of his walk from Hilo to Keauhou via Waimea and Waikoloa was to raise 75,000 pounds of food, or the cash equivalent.  He now says the goal is 100,000 pounds of…

Hike for Hunger Kicks Off Saturday

The Hike for Hunger, to raise awareness, starts Saturday.  Will Zucker plans to walk the 126 miles from Hilo to Keauhou via Waimea and Waikoloa, collecting food and money at KTA stores along the way.  The goal is to raise 75,000 pounds of food or the equivalent (each dollar donated purchases 9 pounds of food).   The public is a key part of this effort, as they’re the ones who are being asked to donate food and funds.
