The University of Hawai‘i on Tuesday received a check at West Hawaii Civic Center for $5.2 million, part of a total contribution of  $9.68 million from Palamanui LLC—a partnership between Hunt Companies and Charles R. Hawaii County Elections Office Ready for Candidate Filings February 1

Hawaii County Office of Elections will have candidate papers for all county elected offices available February 1.  February 1 is the first day candidates may file, with June  5 being the last day for filing.    The candidate forms are available at the West Hawaii Civic Center Elections Office  (on Wednesdays, by appointment only) and at the main Elections Office at 25 Aupuni Center. As State legislative districts are not yet firm, candidates for state offices will not be able to file until the State Reapportionment Commission provides the new district lines.  They had finalized their…

Boat Captain Says Plastic is Choking our Oceans

Captain Charles Moore made the rounds on Hawaii Island in the last several days, sharing his concerns over a large patch of debris floating in the Pacific Ocean.  Moore was sailing in 1997 from Honolulu to Santa Barbara, following a Transpac race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.   As is the practice, he headed north before heading towards California, and encountered a large calm during that El Nino year.  He started seeing trash, while they were more than 1,000 miles from land.  That was the start of his quest to determine where the trash came from.…

KTA Donates Seven Defibrillators to West Hawaii Civic Center

KTA Superstores has donated seven automated external defibrillators to the County of Hawaii to be used at the West Hawaii Civic Center.  The Taniguchi family, who have owned the chain since its inception,  donated the devices in the name of founders Koichi and Taniyo Taniguchi. An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias known and ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.  They treat them through defibrillation, which is an electric shock which stops the irregular heartbeat and allows the heart to establish a normal…

Hawaii State, Counties Invest Most in U. S. Towards Energy Savings

Hawaii is under a self-imposed mandate to reduce its dependency on foreign imported oil, especially for electricity.   A portion of the solution is in energy efficiency.  Now, a national organization has ranked Hawaii No. 1 in the United States for its investment in energy savings performance contracting for public buildings.  The Energy Services Coalition works nationwide with counties and states to increase energy efficiency through building upgrades.  Hawaii’s overall conservation investment is more than $150 million.   The figure includes funds spent by both the State and its many agencies and by the Counties to…

The West Hawaii Civic Center has been the center of County government on the west side of the island for nearly a year–but now, it turns out the contractors have not actually completed their work.  And the County has gone public about it. Firecracker Permits on Sale Now–Next Saturday’s the Night!

Fireworks and firecrackers, and firecracker permits,  are on sale now on Hawaii Island.   Fireworks and firecrackers may be set off legally from 9 p.m. this Saturday, December 31, until 1 a.m. on Sunday morning, January 1.   To purchase firecrackers, a $25 permit is required.  Each permit allows the purchaser to buy up to 5,000 firecrackers, and there’s no limit to the number of permits available to those 18 and older.   Firecracker permits are being sold at the Fire Prevention Office at the County Building in Hilo at 25 Aupuni St., the West Hawaii…

West Hawaii Celebrates Paskong Pinoy

A few hundred of Hawaii Island’s Filipinos, or Filipinos at heart, enjoyed Paskong Pinoy, or A Filipino Christmas, Saturday at West Hawaii Civic Center. Local style performances ranging from traditional Phlippine folk dances with traditional costumes to Filipino pop songs to keiki with ukulele singing Mele Kalikimaka kept the crowd entertained. There was a Philippine cultural exhibit that also displayed traditional Filipino costumes. And there was even a Filipino Santa Claus! Final Redistricting Commission Public Hearing Tuesday in Hilo (audio)

Eleven residents from Pahoa, Waimea, and Kona testified at Monday night’s second-to-last public hearing about the Redistricting Commission’s final draft map.  The hearing only lasted 38 minutes, with most testifiers saying they are pleased with the map in its current draft form.  Testifiers from all three locations–Pahoa and Waimea Council ofices by video, and in person at West Hawaii Civic Center, also praised the commissioners.  They said their work was an example of non-partisan work done in the best interests of the entire community. Right now there’s lots of focus on the upcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit coming to Honolulu.     Here on Hawaii Island,  there will be a student version of the event this weekend. Council Member Ford Sponsoring Preserved Lands Maintenance Bill

Hawaii County Council Member Brenda Ford has a bill coming up Tuesday before the Finance Committee to allocate ¼ of 1% of property taxes to a fund to be used for maintenance of property purchased under the County’s Open Space Preservation plan. According to County Property Manager Ken Von Bergen,  the County has spent around $10 million so far to purchase around 400 acres since the Open Space Land Fund was established in 2006, and 550 more acres are in escrow now.  Purchases include the Waipio Valley Lookout and property at Kawa in Ka’u, plus…

FEMA’s New Flood Maps Out–Appeal Period Pau January 12

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has issued new preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) and a revised Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for Hawai’i County that indicates which properties may be subject to flooding.  This could have an impact on property owners as their mortgage lenders may require new flood insurance, which can be costly. Department of Public Works spokeswoman Noelani Whittington says more than 12,000 properties on Hawaii Island may be affected by the change.  She says the County is sending postcards to alert homeowners.  However, the maps are available for public review online…
