Molly Palmer Catches Kona’s Third Grander This Year

The Charter Desk at Honokohau Harbor reports that a “grander,” or thousand-pound or greater marlin, was brought into Honokohau Harbor Saturday.  Molly Palmer is the angler who caught it.  The marlin weighed 1,022.5 pounds.  Molly was aboard the fishing boat “Anxious” with Captain Neal Isaacs. This is  the third grander of 2012, and the first for “Anxious.”  The big fish was around 15 feet long from nose to tail. Two Trib-Herald Reporters Returning After Unlawful Firing

Tiffany Edwards, reporting in her Big Island Chronicle web site, says that effective Monday, two Hawaii Tribune-Herald reporters who were fired for their union activities will return to their jobs at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.   Hunter Bishop has most recently been the Deputy Director of Environmental Management for the County of Hawaii.  Edwards says Bishop confirmed the news with her by phone.  Bishop has been on vacation recently.   The Hawaii Tribune Herald will also hire back Dave Smith.  Both were fired around six years ago by the Tribune-Herald because of union activity, and the…

West Hawaii Today and the Hawaii Tribune-Herald took top awards at the annual Hawaii Publishers Association awards dinner at which they presented the Pa’i Awards, for excellence in print journalism.   The top award for spot news reporting went to West Hawaii Today, and the Hawaii Tribune-Herald took second place.   West Hawaii Today also took first and second in Spot News Photography.    “Spot News” is a category formerly identified in the Pulitzer Prizes as “breaking news,” and refers to immediate news updates.   The Hawaii Tribune-Herald also took first in the Editorial Series category and second…

The annual King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade 2012 is set for Saturday, June 16, on Ali’i Drive Janet Wells Brown in historic Kailua Village.  The parade will feature more than 100 horses, as well as floats, marching bands, hula halau and the regal pa‘u riders on horseback. In addition to the parade queen and grand marshal’s equestrian units, all eight Hawaiian Islands will be represented by pa‘u equestrian units highlighting the colors and florals of each island. Isle Paper to Charge for Online Access

West Hawaii Today publisher Tracy Fosso has announced the paper will start charging for online access.  For more than a year, they’ve had a subscription available to their “e edition,” a replica of their print version available online.   They’ve also had standard online access to recent selected articles at no charge.   However, starting April 2, next Monday, they plan to charge for almost all  online access. Kona Woman Pleads Guilty to Kona Hospital Foundation Theft

West Hawaii Today is reporting that Kona resident Cheryl Holdcroft has admitting to forging checks and stealing money from the Kona Hospital Foundation.     Holdcroft, 46, will spend 60 days in jail, have five years of unsupervised probation and pay $150,000 in restitution.   Holdcroft was the former development director of the foundation, which serves as the nonprofit fundraising organization for Kona Community Hospital and raises funds to pay for items not covered by fees for services or state subsidies.   Third Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth Strance granted Holdcroft  a five-year deferred acceptance of her guilty pleas…

The West Hawaii Civic Center has been the center of County government on the west side of the island for nearly a year–but now, it turns out the contractors have not actually completed their work.  And the County has gone public about it. Between changes in lines from the new County Council Districts resulting from redistricting and Council members who are either term-limited out or choosing to retire, the Hawaii County Council will have a whole new look at the end of 2012. Kailua-Kona Christmas Parade Chair Barbara Kossow has announced the December 10 parade has sold out.  The deadline was December 1, unless the parade filled earlier–and it has.  Kossow said she had a last minute influx of applications, and thinks the total entries in the parade will be close to 70.  Although that’s slightly more than the target number of 65, Kossow said all the last entries came in the same day so all will be part of the event.
