West Hawaii Today, Other Businesses Target of Vandals

West Hawaii Today is reporting their office was the target of vandals over the weekend.  Their front glass windows were hit at least three times by a softball-sized rock.  They were not alone–police say six organizations had rocks thrown through their windows.  They included a van parked on Kailua Pier, the United Church of Kona-Kohala office, the Department of Human Services’ Hanama Place office, Arbor E & T Services on Luhia Street, and an office on Palani Road. Federal Court Turns Kawa Bay Ownership Case Back to State Court

West Hawaii Today is reporting that a group claiming Native Hawaiian rights to property Hawaii County is trying to buy on Kawa Bay in Ka’u had its case sent back to state court Tuesday, when a federal judge decided he had no jurisdiction over the issue. Abel Simeona Lui claims the property is his, along with an adjacent 235-acre parcel purchased by Hawaii County in 2008 as part of its open space preservation program.   He says his great-great-great grandfather, Timoteo Keawe, got the land in a royal grant.   Lui and others live in tents on…

Marlin Race Results Coming In

The Great Marlin Race started two months ago, and as fishing writing Jim Rizzuto reported in his fishing column in West Hawaii Today a week ago,  some of the results are in. In the last week of July, a 200 pound blue marlin had a close encounter of the bad kind, for a marlin, with a participant in the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.  But Masaharu Matsushita did not haul in the marlin.  Instead, he attached a pop up satellite tag to the marlin before releasing it. The Kawaihae Canoe Club had a Bikini Car Wash Fundraiser at the Kawaihae SeaFood Bar and Grill on Sunday.  Our roving reporter friend, Jim Rizzuto (who also writes the fishing column every Monday in West Hawaii Today), all in the pursuit of good news stories and accompanying photos, had his car washed.  Possibly more than once.  We are pretty sure the club made money.

Fire Chief Oliveira Volunteers to Stay — for Now

Hawaii Fire Department Chief Darryl Oliveira has volunteered to stay on in the position of Chief while the Fire Commission seeks a replacement for him.  Chief Oliveira had announced his retirement several months ago.  He turns 50 on Monday, when he is eligible for full retirement, and intended to retire at that time. Kona Business Expo Getting Serious Crowds

The fourth annual Building and Design Expo, sponsored by Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, will run through Sunday at the Sheraton Keauhou Convention Center.  Chamber President Vivian Landrum said crowds were the largest ever at Friday night’s expo, which was confirmed by several of the vendors who estimated that hundreds of people came to the Expo.  There are 58 booth spaces in use, more than 50 vendors ranging from solar electric to roofing to cabinetry and woodwork to insurers to alarm vendors to West Hawaii Today. County Employee May Be Accused of Wrongdoing

West Hawaii Today is reporting that a Hawaii County employee in the elections office may have been conducting a personal business out of a county-owned building.  County Clerk Jamae Kawauchi and County Council Chair Dominic Yagong have hired an outside investigator to look into the allegations. The warehouse is an elections office facility.   Yagong and Kawauchi were alerted to the possibility of abuse and visited the facility July 7.  An outside source told West Hawaii Today they apparently discovered signs that an employee had been operating a sign-printing business.  The source reported they also found…

Kona Hospital ER Evacuated

West Hawaii Today is reporting that Kona Community Hospital’s Emergency Room was evacuated Thursday morning after chemical fumes apparently sickened 13 people.  Employees reported smelling a strong odor around 8:30 a.m.   That triggered a “code orange” response for hazardous materials.  The hospital evacuated around 35 people who had been in the emergency room area.  Hawaii Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team was called. The event was triggered by an apparent leak of the chemical xylene, which is used in the hospital’s morgue and laboratory.  Xylene is a flammable, colorless liquid used as a solvent or paint…

Kailua-Kona July 4th Parade to Honor Fire and Police Vets

The Kailua-Kona Community Parade Association has announced that the Grand Marshals for the 16th Annual Kailua-Kona Independence Day Parade will be five members of the Hawaii County Police and Fire Departments that have served active duty in the United States Armed Forces.  The parade is Monday, July 4, at 5:30 p.m., starting at the Kona Pool next to Kekuaokalani Gym on Kuakini Highway. Big Island Newspapers Win Publisher Awards

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald won 9 Hawaii Publishers Association Awards in Honolulu last week.  They took seven first-place awards and two second-place awards. The daily East Hawaii newspaper won awards for spot news reporting, editorial enterprise reporting, editorial series, investigative reporting, sports photography, essay photography, excellence in design, and editorial opinion. West Hawaii Today won two awards, for editorial column and excellence in design. Second Shark Attack at Lyman’s – No Injuries

Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Gerald Kosaki said lifeguards have posted shark sighting signs at Kahalu’u Beach Park and La’aloa (White Sands) Beach Park after a woman’s  surfboard was bitten by a shark Wednesday at Lyman’s Surf Spot.  The beach areas are close to Lyman’s, which has no beach and is typically only a surfing spot. West Hawaii Today is reporting the surfer  is Theresa Fernandez of Holualoa.  She says she felt a bump on her surfboard Wednesday afternoon and then felt something pulling on her board.  She quickly paddled to shore.  She was uninjured.…

Sheraton Keauhou Sold

West Hawaii Today is reporting that the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa has been sold. The 22-acre, 521-room resort was sold Thursday for an undisclosed price to Kona Surf Partners LLC, a New York-based equity group that formed a Hawaii partnership February 10. The property will be managed by Pyramid Kona Management LLC. The resort’s 125 union employees received layoff notices Monday from Starwood Hotels and Resort, a hotel management company that has managed the Sheraton Keauhou.   They also received notification that they will be rehired by the new owners.   The sale is set…
