Kealakehe Intermediate Teens Go to Oahu Talent Competition

Fourteen talented competitors, groups and individuals, took place in the Kealakehe Intermediate School Talent Contest Thursday evening.  At the end of the evening, break dancing phenom B Boy Phantom was named the first place winner.  He and singer Kung Kea Piper, who performed the song “Beautiful”, will go on to Oahu to the Brown Bag to Stardom Competition.   Judges Kim Eaton, from West Hawaii Today; local performance teacher Marylei Drake, and Big Island News Center’s Sherry Bracken said judging was extremely difficult.  They considered the talented kids’ stage presence, technical skill, and audience appeal The…

West Hawaii Today is reporting that the Marine Corps heavy helicopter squadron 363, commonly known as the Lucky Red Lions, will do a “fly by” over South and North Kona today (Tuesday) around 10 a.m., from Honaunau to Keahole International Airport.  The “fly by” is a mahalo to more than 25 Kona coffee farmers for their donations of Kona coffee to servicemen over the past three years.    To date, Kona coffee farmers have donated 2.5 tons of  coffee  to Hawaii-based units of the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hawaii County Council Meet

Hawaii County Council met Thursday at 25 Aupuni Center in Hilo and discussed several items. They agreed to fund a new $800,000 bulldozer for use by the Department of Environmental Management at the Hilo Landfill.   West Hawaii Today had broken the story months ago that the department had sold a bulldozer for $23,000 in 2003, and then had continued to lease the bulldozer back, spending more than $800,000 on the lease and more than $42,000 in repairs.   The new bulldozer must be built, so it will be months before it arrives. Captain Guy Terwilliger caught a 1,011-pound marlin on December 27, only the second time since 1960 that a “grander,” or 1,000-pound (or larger) marlin has been caught off West Hawaii in December.   According to West Hawaii Today columnist Jim Rizzuto, the only other time since records were kept was when Jerome Judd brought in a 1,165 marlin on his Jun Ken Po on December 28, 1994.   Last week’s catch was on the charter boat Game Plan.  Angler Tom Crader and his wife, visiting from Anchorage, Alaska, shared the honors.   (Thanks to Jim Rizzuto and Guy…

West Hawaii Vets Cemetery Gets Shrine Status

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded the 82 acre West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery “shrine status.”  Shrine status means the cemetery’s design and features meet the National Cemetery Administration standards.   In order to retain the status, the County and the nonprofit West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery Development and Expansion Association are committed to maintain the cemetery at the level of the “shrine status” for its entirety.   Over the past several years, volunteers from the nonprofit group plus local businesses and individuals have donated time to help upgrade the cemetery and do plantings.    The “shrine…
