The Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build was completed, for all intents and purposes, on Saturday.  The five homes were finished ahead of schedule and the blessing was held Saturday.  On Sunday, volunteers were putting on the finishing touches–washing the windows and minor touch ups. After complaints since August 6, 2012, when the Hawaii County Clerk made the sudden decision to remove full-time staffing from the Kona Elections Office at West Hawaii Civic Center, there is finally, as of September 18, a sign on the door stating that the office is sometimes not staffed. The issue came to a head after Deputy Clerk Steve Lopez sent an email to several lower-level County employees working at West Hawaii Civic Center, “thanking them” for agreeing to handle elections inquiries that came into the office when it’s unstaffed.  The problem was, none of…

The Hawaii Police Department will reach new heights September 28 to 30, Friday through Sunday,  to support Special Olympics West Hawaii, a year-round program dedicated to helping children and adults with intellectual disabilities improve their quality of life through sports. For Cop On Top, local police officers will spend Friday through Sunday in the air on scaffolding at the Walmart on Henry Street in Kailua-Kona. The County of Hawai‘i Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting an informational meeting to talk about the Kealakehe Regional Park Master Plan on Thursday, September 27, at 6 p.m.  The meeting will be at West Hawaii Civic Center, at the intersection of Kealakehe Parkway and Ane Keohokalole Highway, Building G, the Community Meeting Hale.   Last Wednesday, there were five slabs at the Homes at Lai’opua waiting for the Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii Blitz Build to begin.  The ambitious plan was to build five homes in ten days. Today, the homes are there–not quite complete, but the walls are up, the houses are painted, and they are definitely on their way to being homes for the five receiving families. Police Charge Hilo Man with Burglary, Theft, Firearms

Hawaii Police Department charged a Hilo man in connection with an investigation into burglaries, as well as the possession of a firearm. Kawika Larinaga-Napihaa, a 22-year-old man,  of Hilo, was charged with two counts of Burglary 1st Degree, two counts of Theft II Degree, and two firearms charges, bail set at $96,000.  He was previously arrested and charged in July with other offenses. Larinaga-Napihaa was  arrested in a business parking lot off of Makaala Street in Hilo on Thursday, September 13, at approximately 2:30 pm along with two other suspects after it was discovered that…

The Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build got underway Wednesday evening with a blessing of all the home sites at Lai Opua, across from Kealakehe High School,  where the five homes will be built in the next ten days.  The families, dozens of volunteers, members of the Board of Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii,  Habitat West Hawaii founder Lorraine Highkin, and lots of dignitaries were on hand for this significant event.  Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii is the only Habitat affiliate in the State to undertake such an ambitious project. Kealakehe Intermediate School’s School Resource Officer, Paul Mangus, was selected by Kona Crime Prevention Committee as the Officer of the Year at a luncheon Wednesday at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel that also honored all other Officers of the Month for the last year. The West Hawaii Lions Club consisting of the Hamakua, Waimea, Waikoloa, Kohala, Kaloko Branch, Kailua Kona, and Lions Club of Kona will be holding a charity walk- Walk for Vision and Hearing” to benefit the Hawaii Lions Foundation.   The Hawaii Lions Foundation, is the non-profit arm of Hawaii Lions.
