Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii is the main sponsor of the “Blitz Build,” which means they plan to build five homes in ten days.  And they’re asking for community members with all kinds of skills, or no building skills at all, to help.   The “Blitz Build” is set for September 12 through 22.  The homes are going to be at the Villages at Lai Opua, right across from Kealakehe High School.  All five will be three bedroom, two bath dwellings.  The families who will live in them all have struggled and will finally get…

Molly Palmer Catches Kona’s Third Grander This Year

The Charter Desk at Honokohau Harbor reports that a “grander,” or thousand-pound or greater marlin, was brought into Honokohau Harbor Saturday.  Molly Palmer is the angler who caught it.  The marlin weighed 1,022.5 pounds.  Molly was aboard the fishing boat “Anxious” with Captain Neal Isaacs. This is  the third grander of 2012, and the first for “Anxious.”  The big fish was around 15 feet long from nose to tail. The Hawaii County Clerk finally issued a press release, the first since Saturday’s Primary Election.  On that day she issued a Press Release to select media (excluding the Hawaii Tribune Herald, Hawaii Public Radio, Big Island Chronicle, Big Island Video News, LAVA 105, and Big Island News Center, among others) at 9:09 a.m. stating that one election site, Kahakai School, had opened at 8:35 a.m., late because of “supply problems.”  At 4:30 p.m. that day, she issued a press release that did include most of the Hawaii Island media, announcing that at 2:30 p.m. Governor…

Governor Neil Abercrombie has issued a proclamation to extend polling hours on Hawai’i Island only by an hour and a half today. Polling locations in the Counties of Maui, Kaua’i and Honolulu will close at the 6 p.m.; polling locations in Hawai’i County will close at 7:30 p.m. The Governor’s statement acknowledges that this morning, there were multiple polling stations on Hawai’i Island that opened later than scheduled. In the latest to the Hawaii County Election Office drama, there is another change in where absentee ballot by mail voters can return their ballots, and they MAY be turned in at Early Voting Walk In locations. The Hawaii County Elections office in Kona was open Tuesday morning, but nobody was home. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is sponsoring a 115-mile bike ride taking place today, Saturday, and tomorrow, Sunday, August 5,  on the west side of Hawaii Island.  The event will raise funds for the battle against MS, as each rider has raised or is raising funds to donate as part of their ride. The State Office of Elections will test the entire voting system, including that of Hawaii County Office of Elections, Saturday morning, August 4, at 9 a.m.  The test will include absentee mail counters and the entire data network at all the Elections Offices in the state.
