Van – Station Wagon Crash Thursday Kills One, Hurts One

Hawaii County Fire Department has released details of Thursday evening’s crash on Highway 11 at Glenwood, by Hirano Store just south of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.  A van driven by a 33-year-old woman was heading towards Hilo when it slammed into a station wagon.  The van flew in the air and flipped over, landing on its roof.   Bystanders helped extricate the woman from the vehicle.  When Fire Department arrived she was sitting near the van.  They transported her to Hilo Medical Center with chest, abdomen, and neck pain.

The drive of the station wagon was an approximately 55-year-old man.  He was ejected from the vehicle on impact, and was found lying in a drainage ditch with no signs of life.

The Fire Department commented that police had the highway closed for several hours for their investigation.

Police Department Update 9 p.m. Thursday:

Hawaii Police Department says as of 9 p.m. on Thursday, Highway 11 at Glenwood has been reopened.  They closed the highway for an investigation following a fatal crash.

Hawaii County Police have closed HIghway 11 at the Hirano Store, south of Volcano, by Glenwood Road, in both directions Thursday evening due to a traffic crash.  The crash was around 5 p.m., between a van and a station wagon.  There is reportedly one fatality, and one person seriously injured and transported to the hospital.

Police say the highway will be closed until around 7:30 p.m. so they can do a full investigation.
