Hawaii County Elections Office now says the yellow voter cards will be mailed out July 18, instead of the June 30 date initially promised. The yellow voter registration cards are important because they tell voters what district they are in for State Senate, State House, and County Council–particularly important since there has been Redistricting since the last election. That means many people may not be in the District they thought they were in, and their usual voting location may have changed. The voter cards for Maui County and Kaua’i have already been sent out, but the State Office of Elections says the function is controlled by the Hawaii County Clerk.
Voters may apply for a permanent or this-election-only absentee ballot by August 4, by going to www.hawaii.gov/elections and downloading the form. Or go to the County Elections Office at 25 Aupuni Center or the West Hawaii Civic Center. As a note, however, August 4 is a Saturday, which means the Elections Office would not be able to process the application until Monday, August 6. With the Primary coming up Saturday, August 11, and all ballots–even absentee–needing to be in by the time the polls close on August 11, absentee voters who wait until the last minute may not have time to get their ballots in. So if you want an absentee ballot, apply now!
Voters also have the option of voting at three walk-in polling places around the island from July 30 to July 9. In the past there have been additional locations in North Kohala and Ka’u. According to the County Elections Office, a voter from any part of the island may go into any walk-in voting location, which is different from past years when voters had to go to the closest walk-in location.
